Carla spends a night of ecstasy and wakes to a beautiful morning.
She wakes with her head high, flicks her hair to the side and wears her seductive smile for her skin, and that of her girlfriend is safe.
But when a day is at its brighter then it can only get darker.

CARLA

We spend the night in each other's arms. We fall asleep wrapped in each other as if we can not bear to part, even in sleep we can not bear to let each other go. When I awake in the early morning she is still on top of me, her lips on my nipple and when I move underneath her I feel her stir with desire for me.

I close my eyes and let myself drift away while she loves me until the early morning sun comes brightly through the shutters and the morning bell rings, warning me to get back to my hostel.

Lax walks me to the door and I hastily walk out. I plan to get in my hostel by the garden door and creep up to my room in time for the morning roll call but when I get to my door Zahra blocks the entrance.

"You delightful fool!" She hisses like a snake and suddenly pulls me for a tight embrace. "Thank God you're back, another hour or two and everyone would have known."

"What is it?" I ask quickly as Zahra lets me in and locks the door behind us.

Her face is grim. "The matron was just here for the roll cal and you were missing. I lied for you, again."

"Thank you. What happened last night?"

"They were after a specific couple, apparently. A girl from your class who's rumoured to have been seeing the academic prefect. You wouldn't believe how scandalous it was!"

"Why?"

"They were caught in the act. Fondling each other like rabbits on heat!"

I give a little chuckle and rush to shower and make it to class quite on time. In all the gossiping not once is my name whispered and I give a sigh of relief as evening comes and darkness blankets the sixty-two acres of our school.

At ten in the night I knock at the door to Lax's room and put my head inside. She is quite alone, white and wan on the bed.

"Oh you," she says unpleasantly. "You might as well come in."

I step into the room and Jane, her roommate, enters after me and shuts the door firmly behind us.

"What's the matter?" I ask

"I'm bleeding," Lax says shortly. " And I've for gripping pains, like the pains of childbirth. I think I'm losing it."

The blank horror of her words is too much for me to take in. The contrast between last night's loving and this dawning disaster is too much for me. I turn to Jane.

"Losing it? What is the losing?"

"You didn't know she is pregnant?" Jane asks incredulously.

The question knocks the wind out of me like a blow to the belly. My knees buckle and I sink to the floor, holding myself tight, as if my heart will break out of me.
