Once I escaped that horrifying gym room, I followed behind the rest of the class. Peyton got in front of me to get away from Mekaylah, and of course....Mekaylah being Mekaylah, she followed him so she was in front of me and behind Peyton. I ended up being at the end of the line..
As soon as everyone was lined up at Mrs. Grisham's classroom door, she told us that we could sit where ever we wished, but if it caused a problem she would give us all assigned seats. As everyone scattered throughout the room, I walked up to a seat in the front row, beside Mekaylah. As I sat down, I looked over at Peyton who was staring at me blankly. He was standing in the back of the room watching me.
"Dear, would you take a seat please?" said Mrs. Grisham as she was looking through a stack of papers.
Peyton jumped at the sound of her voice. He nodded and looked at the empty seat to my right. He walked over and sat down beside me. I looked at him and smiled warmly. and he smiled back. I glanced over at Mekaylah's direction and she was just staring at me. I couldn't tell if she was looking at me or Peyton, but she seemed to be really pissed off. My job is done here.
"What are you looking at?" I said innocently
"Nothing.. Skylar.." she said coldly. She glared at me with this cold, hard stare. I honestly thought she was going to stab me at any moment, but she finally looked away after staring for about three minutes.
I looked over at the white board where my teacher was slapping a bunch of shit. She was writing down a bunch of page numbers.
English- Pg. READ STORY 164-189 Pg. 191-193 DO ALL QUESTIONS 1-60
Math- Pg. 110 1-51 Pg. 113 1-70 Pg. 124 1-54
What the hell? There is no way I am doing all of that! What kind of teacher gives us that much homework on the first day of school? She didn't even tell us anything about herself or bother to ask us how our summer was. She just slapped down a bunch of fucking page numbers..and told us to get it done before we had to leave!
I looked over at Peyton and he already had his English book out. He got out his binder and began ripping out ten sheets of notebook paper. He looked at me and handed me five sheets. I shook my head and laughed.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome." he whispered so the teacher wouldn't hear him.
I smiled and wrote down the page numbers on a sheet of paper that Peyton had given me. I got out my math book and quickly flipped to the back of the book so that I could write down some of the answers. There were no answers in the back of the book. Just my luck. I got out my pencil and started working out some of the problems. Most of them were pretty foreign to me, but I knew how to do some of them.
Math was one of my worst subjects. I sucked at it pretty bad. I had at least a C in math last year. Everyone else had A's or B's in every subject. Even Mekaylah and Peyton were better at it than me. I sucked at everything and it was obvious that everyone knew that.
I looked over my shoulder and at the back of the room I saw Andrew flirting with a bunch of preppy girls. He saw me watching him and winked at me. I just rolled my eyes and continued to do my math. I guess the teacher noticed Andrew and the preps, too. Mrs. Grisham cleared her throat and began to speak.
"Excuse me. Is there something you would like to share with the class, Mr. Andrew?" said Mrs. Grisham as she glared at him. I assumed that they knew each other or something, considering that she knew his name..
"Uh..no." he said and gave her that duh look. They stared at each other for a few seconds until she broke the silence.
"Just don't let it happen again, Andrew." She looked at him one last second and then she sat back down in her squeaky chair, continuing to rummage through a stack of papers she had on her desk.
