Remembered

     They came from all over to see it. The mighty statue that stood tall, a reminder of the victory the people of the united galaxy had won. A reminder of the sacrifices made, so many more than just a strong, caring princess who had saved them all. 

     Orphans, widows and widowers, those who had lost children, brothers and sisters, friends, they all stood before it and smiled as they remembered their loved ones who had fought so valiantly alongside her and the rest of the paladins. Brave veterans rested their hands on the base of the statue and remembered. Remembered the brutal fighting, fallen comrades, and clinging to desperate hope that they could do this, that they wouldn't fail those who depended on them. Freed peoples fought back tears as they finally looked upon the face of one of their saviors and remembered how the desolate pit inside them had been filled a little bit whenever they heard word of one of the paladins victories. Alteans bowed before it, honoring the fallen queen that had fearlessly and lovingly saved so much more than just her people. 

     And for generations to come, parents brought their children to look up at her face. In reverent voices they told her story, the story of the woman who gave herself to save everything. Children would excitedly exclaim that they wanted to be just like her, just as fearless and compassionate. When they ran off to play and idolize their hero, their parents would turn back to her memorial, wipe away the silent tear that slipped down their cheek, and in hushed whispers say "Thank you." Thank you for the joy in their hearts as they watched their children laugh and play, thank you for the being able to smile again. Thank you for being able to feel safe after what felt like an eternity of fear. Thank you for bringing truth to that hope for a better future.
