Eddie woke up to two big blue eyes and a freckled nose in his face. He screamed and punched whatever human was on top of him. Richie fell to the floor grumbling.

Eddie tried to hide his laughter. "uhh sorry but what the hell were you doing on top of me?"

Richie turned his head sheepishly. "Trying to wake you up...duh."

Eddie groaned and slumped back down in bed. "Oh right, we have classes today."

Richie was already dressed and he motioned for Eddie to do the same. "Come on. We still have to stop at Starbucks for muffins. I didn't have time to cook breakfast and everyone knows it's the most important meal of the day."

Eddie quickly threw on a t-shirt and grabbed his book bag. He was in for a long day

Eddie and Richie walked quietly side-by-side, Eddie munching on a blueberry muffin while Richie nibbled on a chocolate scone.

"so...what's your first class. " Richie broke the silence.

Eddie stared at the sky for a while before glancing down at his schedule. "Art with Ms. Mayweather."

Richie grinned. "Sweet. Me too."

Eddie brightened at the thought of a class with Richie. Knowing someone would certainly make the day better-plus people would probably leave him alone if they saw he had an ally. Eddie wasn't sure if he was ready to call Richie a friend yet-after all, they'd only known each other for about a week but Eddie felt like he'd known Richie forever.

All too soon, they arrived at Maine Uni. Richie led the way to the art room because he'd already had the class before. He told Eddie all about how awesome it was.

"On the first day she mainly went over the syllabus, but this isn't just painting, we get to use clay and charcoal pens, and even photography sometimes."

Eddie decided to refrain from telling Richie he'd signed up for a separate photography class.

Eddie had base classes too like chemistry, creative writing, and algebra. In chemistry, he didn't have a lab partner so he teacher pared him with a quiet boy named Stanley. Stanley was really smart and Eddie took and instant liking to him. He told Eddie all about an extra curricular class he was taking on 'bird watching.'

"It also includes bird anatomy. Mr. Nielson said we might even end up dissecting birds!" Stanley seemed to realize that it might appear weird to be so excited about cutting open birds so he stepped back and licked his lips nervously. "It's just that I want to become an ornithologist. I know for a fact that some of the girls in that class won't be able to take the dissection, though."

Eddie understood. He walked to lunch with Stanley and met Richie outside the quad. A tall Brown haired boy wearing a striped shirt stood talking to Richie. He must have been saying something funny because Richie was doubled over in laughter. Eddie felt a quick pang of jealousy, then abruptly stopped himself.

Ridiculous catching feelings, feelings absolutely suck.

He walked over with Stanley shyly tagging along.

"Hi rich, this is Stan. He's in my chemistry class."

"Epic." Richie reached over and tugged on one of Stanley's golden curls. "Wow! It really does spring up like everyone says they do!"

Stan looked flustered and Eddie immediately apologized on Richie's behalf. "That lovely character you just met is my roommate, Richie. He makes terrible first impressions, trust me, I know."

"Oh you're Eddie!" The tall boy spoke at last.

Eddie raised an eyebrow. "ye-e-s? Who might you be?"

The boy face palmed. "Duh. Excuse me. I'm Bill. You know, boy who hosted that rager the other night?"

Richie scoffed. "Oh bill, stop trying to get clout off that party. People won't even remember it next week. Anyway, Eddie wasn't at the party. He was eating ramen in his adorable PJs."

Eddie rolled his eyes. "Beep Beep, loser."

Richie held up his hands in surrender. "just telling the facts, sir."

Bill grinned. "Cool. So, do you guys wanna go to Nelly's? It's this great BBQ place I discovered on my first day here."

Stan pumped his fist. "I love Nelly's! Let's go!"

Eddie shrugged at Stan's quick mood change. BBQ can really bring out the beast in people.

Richie hung back to walk next to Eddie. He slung his arm over his shoulder.

"So how was Little Eds' first day?"

Eddie grinned and groaned at the same time. "Not as bad as I expected, actually. In creative writing some kid named Henry shoved me and didn't apologize, but in chemistry I made a new friend. " He gestured at Stanley. "and I have art and algebra with you, which is also great."

Richie grinned. "Soon you'll have another friend. Bill is awesome. I've known him since grade school."

Eddie smirked. "Known him since grade school or been friends since grade school?"

"Known. We became friends in high school. he was actually kind of a dick when he was younger. One time he told the teacher on me for eating dirt out of the sandbox."

Eddie shoved Richie's arm and wrinkled his nose. "ew that's disgusting. Don't make me lose my appetite right before we eat!"

Richie shrugged. 'Touche, Eds."

"What does that even mean? That doesn't even make sense in this context!"

"Whatever Eds."

"It's Eddie, not Eds!
