I walk into a Birch library. Calling it a library is unfair to all the other libraries in the world. Really it's just a small hazel colored room with bookshelves lining the walls and a few down the center. I head immediately to the back of the room, hoping not to get drawn in to a conversation by the old woman sitting behind the front desk.
I'm not looking for anything particular- just something that will take me far away. Fantasy might be good. I can not tell how the library is organized at all. There are no labels whatsoever. I scan the bookshelves until I find a book by Rick Riodran. I've probably already read it but anything beats standing in this room any longer. I'm about to take it off the shelves when I notice an arm next to mine. It's covered with a sleeve of bracelets that climb up to the elbow. From small slits in between them I see bronze, suntanned skin. My eyes move up shoulder with shiny almost white hair that looks like it's been washed in sand and saltwater and left out in the sun to dry until it's been bleached completely. She's definitely from California. Maybe I'm just homesick but I feel like if I kiss her pink lips a wave will come crashing over us and I'll be back in Santa Monica with the sun shining and sand between my toes. I almost do.
"Hi!" She says. I frown. Her voice is sickly sweet with a little bit of an accent. I look her in the eyes which lead directly to her soul and see the lush green forest I've been trapped in for the last two week. Definitely not from California. "I'm Fawn." She throws an extra-friendly smile my way.
"Cassidy" I reply. I grab a book off the shelf and go to check it out.
