I’ve never been the confident type. I’m not the kind of person that doesn’t mind being judged. Ruby on the other hand, doesn’t care. Mostly because she has natural beauty but also because she can get any guy she wants. Her current boyfriend, Mitchel, got down on his knee with a candy ring and pretty much begged her to give him a chance. They’ve been dating for a month now and to be completely honest, it’s the strongest relationship Ruby has ever been in.

‘So who’s that new boy?’ Ruby says to me, snapping me out of my day dreams.

‘His name’s Christian.’ I say tiredly.

‘Ooh, he’s cute. Christian and Lanii, doesn’t that sound adorable? You could be Lastian.. or Canii!’ Ruby blurts out while applying her eyeliner in the bathroom mirror.

‘Shutup, he’d never like me in a million years.’

‘You never know, with a bit of flirting and alcohol, we’ll be at your wedding in no time.’

‘You know I don’t like drinking.’

‘But he might.’ She says, adding a wink in before grabbing her makeup bag and leaving the bathroom, knowing I’ll follow.

I walk out of the bathroom and make my way to the bench. Once I arrive I chuck my makeup in my bag and walk over to Christian.

‘Hi I’m Ruby.’ I say, smiling.

‘I’m Christian.’ He says, returning my smile.

‘Ruby, did you do the maths?’ Lanii says, pulling her phone out of her pocket.

‘No but Mitch did, get the answers off him.’ I reply while sitting next to Christian.

‘So.. do you know anyone here?’

‘Yeah.. I went to kinder here.’

‘Aw, so did Lala.’

I walk out of school, bag once again slung over my shoulder. Mum can’t pick me up this afternoon, she’s got a last minute appointment with a doctor. I stroll down the footpath, studying the small cracks and dents like I’ve done a million times before. I don’t make it home until 4pm, an hour after school finishes, because of a car accident which cause the traffic lights to malfunction, meaning I couldn’t cross until they fixed it. I push open the door, the lock still remains broken from one of Patrick’s drunken nights.

‘I’m home..’ I sigh, knowing no one is here to greet me. I slip off my black school shoes and walk into the kitchen before scanning the pantry for something to eat. I can’t find anything apart from three packets of two minute noodles and some pasta so I look in the fridge. Cheese and milk are the only things in there. I decide to just wait until dinner, it’s only two hours away anyway. I don’t have any homework and the internet’s turned off.. for once I have literally nothing to do. I call Ruby, hoping I can stay at hers tonight.

‘Hello!’

‘Can I pleeeeeeeeeeeease stay at yours tonight?’

‘Let me ask.’ Three minutes later she picks up the phone again.

‘Mum said you can.’

‘Ok I’ll see you in half an hour.’

‘Bye.’

‘Bubye.’ I hang up and scroll through my contacts, landing on the one that says ‘birthgiver’.

‘im staying at rubys tonight, ill be home tomorrow afternoon.’

I hit send and walk to my bedroom, picking up my overnight bag on the way. I get my laptop, the Christmas present my grandparents had bought me, some essentials and my school uniform for tomorrow. I get my school bag and shoes, turn the heater on for mum and walk out the door. I reach the gate in my fence and insert my white headphones in my ears, A Team by Ed Sheeran playing. Half an hour later I’m at Ruby’s house. I enter without knocking, her house is my second home. I walk down to her bedroom to find her, Mitchel and Christian sitting cross legged on the floor.

‘You’re finally here!’ Ruby says.

‘Sorry.. what are you all doing here?’ I say, looking at the two boys.

‘Thank god Monday’s over party, with four people.’ Mitchel says cheekily, flashing his pearly white teeth.

‘This should be fun.’ I mumble before chucking my bags on Ruby’s bed and sitting down to join the circle.
