Chapter Two

I am laying in my bedroom while checking Instagram.  There are so many people posting pictures about their first dy of school and how amazing it was.  I decide to post a picture that I took this morning before leaving for school.  I caption it “Had a great last first day of school.  Can’t believe I’m already a senior and this time next year I will be starting College instead of high school.  #firstdayofschool #hadagreatday #lovedseeingmyfriends #finallyasenior.”

After a few more minutes of looking through Instagram, I get a call from Kayden.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Autumn, have you seen the partners list for our group project in English yet?”

“No, why?  Are they already posted on Google Classrooms?”

“Yes, go check them out and then call me back.”

“Okay, wait so like why do I hav-”

*Line goes dead*

“Well, I guess goodbye then.”

That was a bit weird...Whatever.  I roll off my bed and lazily walk over to my bookshelf where I had placed my computer to charge.  I log on and open up Google Classrooms.  I open up the folder labeled “To Kill a Mocking Bird Partner Assignments.”  I pull up the partner list and search for my name.

no.

no.

No.

No

NO.

NO.

I can’t be partnered with him.

This isn’t going to work….

I got partnered with Christian Bennett.

This should be fun...not…

I mean, maybe he really is smart, maybe he isn’t guess we will find out.

I look and see who Kayden got paired with.  He got paired with a girl named Natalia.  I’m not sure exactly who she is.  I’ve seen her before, but I’ve never talked to her before.  Oh well, I need to call Kayden back now.

I close my computer and walk back to my bed.  Where’s my phone at….I know I left it right by my pillow.  I start panic-ally and searching my bed frantically for my phone.  I eventually start pulling up my covers and vigorously shaking it.

*Thud*

I found my phone.

I jump off my bed and retrieve my phone which landed on the floor.  I hope I didn’t crack the screen.  I pick it up and examine it.  No cracks in the screen or anywhere.  Good.  I unlock my phone and search for Kayden in my contacts.  I call him back and the phone only rings twice before he picks up.

“So , I’m guessing you saw who you got partnered with.”

“Yes,...I’m not very excited about it either.  I was hoping you and I were partners.”

“Me too.  I got paired with Natalia.”

“Yeah, I saw.”

“Yeah, I just wanted you to know about who you were partnered with.”

“...You couldn’t have just texted me about it.”

“I figured you would look quicker if I called.”

“True”

“See, I was correct”

“Yeah anyway, so Natalia, is she-”  “AUTUMN DINNER IS READY!”  I hear my mom yell from downstairs.”

“I got to go Kayden, Dinner is ready.  Sorry, I’ll text you later.”

“Alright, Bye”

I hang up the phone and make my way downstairs.  Time for the questions, ‘How was school?’ ad things like that.  This should be fun.

I walk into the dinning room and take my usual seat.  My dad and sister are already there.  “Nice of you to finally come out of your room for once.”  my dad says.  “Haha, very funny Daddy.”

Mom walks in carrying a pot of soup.  We all sit down and we fill up our bowls with Mom's Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, my favorite.

"So girls, how was school today?" Mom asks.  Ugh, the dreaded question.  Why does everyone always want to know about school?  Ask me about my Instagram followers.  Or what is happening on Pinterest.  Something I'd be interested in.  My life online is a lot more interesting than my actual life...sad yeah I know.

"Autumn."

"Hm, what?"

"How was school?"

"Fine, like it usually is."

"That's it?  Just fine?"

"Yeah.  Oh and we already have a group assignment so sometime this week I'll either bring my partner here, or over to his house, just whatever we agree on.  Probably tomorrow I will try to get him to work on it."

"Wait, Him?  As in....?"

"Christian Bennett."

"Oh okay."

I quickly finish my soup and head upstairs to my room.  I open up facebook and see I have a message from someone.  I check the notification and it was Christian...

Christian: Hey, so I see that we are partners for the English Assignment.

Me:  Yeah, so did I.  So, I was thinking that whenever we get the actual assignment to start working on it as soon as possible to be able to get it done quicker so it doesn't interfere with any of your schedule.

Christian:  Lol, I was thinking, if you're okay with it, that we could go to my house afterschool?

Me:  How far is it from school?  I walk to school, and don't have a car I can drive over there.  Mom is using my car while hers is in the shop.

Christian:  Well, I guess I could give you a ride.  You know, if you would feel comfortable riding with me, or like going to my house.

Me:  Lol, yes I would be fine with it.  And yeah if it would bug you to give me a lift I would really appreciate it.

Christian:  Yeah, it's totally okay with me, just tomorrow afterschool, meet me by the old tree in the front of the school.  I'll be coming from basketball practice.  I'll try not to be sweaty.

Me:  Lol, okay.

Chirstian:  So, who would have ever thought I would be talking to The Autumn Rose.

The Autumn Rose What?

Me:  "The Autumn Rose"?  What's that about.

Christian:  Lol

Me:  Um...where's the humor in my question?

Christian:  Oh, you really don't know do you?

Me:  No.

Christian:  Sooo, I got to go.  See you tomorrow, Goodnight, sweet dreams babe.

Me:  Wait, you didn't answer my question!

Christian Bennett isn't logged on at the moment.  Your message will be delivered when they log back on.

Wait.  Did he call me babe??

What is that about.

Why did he call me babe??

I don't get any sleep that night.
