I pull on guardsmen's clothing. I have to get out of Beijing. I am Yuke Qing, daughter of Emperor Guangxu and Empress Xiaodingjing. My claim to the throne is weakened with the arrival of Zaifeng, brother to my late father. My handmaidens sleep on the floor below me, in my personal palace, the Mansion of Cherry Blossoms. If they hear me leave, then I am done for. I must be careful while escaping. My life depends on it. I must find my way to the only place that can help me with this curse. If Zaifeng and my mother discover I have fire in my heart I will be executed. Tonight I set course for Fenzi, the only city that still worships Shijie, the element goddess. There I can find a way to rid myself of the curse of fire.
