Eighteen
I was still recovering from the shock of Link's words. Thankfully, he graced me with the mercy of his distance the whole ride to Lucian's office. I could still hear his words ringing in my head, each time my insides reacting differently, albeit always intensely. How could he do this to me? For years, I still couldn't shake him off.
A part of me wanted to dunk myself deep into water, cleansing me of Link. Because it was becoming embarrassingly hard to rub him off.
As usual he parked upfront and I jumped out the car, sparing no moment and giving less than no care Not giving at how hasty I looked. I didn't have to look behind me to know Link would be taking his sweet time lumbering up the steps.
I passed the empty reception desk and straight to the double doors that led me inside the offices.
Right as I opened the door, Errol stood there. I knew he wouldn't say a thing so after an exchange of looks, he stepped in front of me, leading the way. His wide shoulders obstructed my view but since I had been to this office numerous times already, I didn't exactly have to focus where I was heading.
Which gave my mind another opportunity to wander right back to what happened after Link said those words.
"Even if you think that," I said through my gritted teeth, pushing his hands off me. I could help me think straight. "I won't act on anything."
His lips curved into a smirk. "Because you're scared?"
"Because it will waste both our time." I had no idea why I was entertaining this conversation. The sane thing to do right now was stitch my lips together and give no more lip.
"I beg to differ, especially how we spent our time just now." He stepped closer into my body. I breathed out, instantly regretting it as our chest brushed against each other. I couldn't even hide it anymore.
"You're exhausting!" I exclaimed before fully merging into him.
One thing I could be glad about is how I took him by surprise. He didn't expect that, as he thought I would be cowering away.
I grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him down to my face, mashing our lips together. His groan filled my ears, and I could instantly feel his lower length twitch.
His strong arms wrapped around me, deepening the kiss until I physically felt myself melt. It was as though he could set all cells within me on fire, rendering me motionless and... I loved every second of it.
I was the first to pull away, trying my best to get my laboured breathing in control.
Link dropped his head on my forehead, his eyes closed but his chest rising up and down. "Fuuuck." He breathed out, the last bit coming out shakier than usual.
"I don't disagree with you." I whispered. "But we aren't good for each other."
Errol stopped walking and I halted my steps just in time before I bumped into him. "She's in there." He pointed his hand towards the door.
I didn't wait for anything else and reached for the door handle. I opened the door and soon found Joy in there, sitting in Lexie's lap with a phone in her hand.
Lexie was the first to look up, and as soon as her eyes met mine, tears filled in with them. I shook my head at her, my own eyes filling up but we couldn't say anything out loud next to Joy.
She got the message and gave me a firm nod. "Joy! Look who it is!"
Joy looked up from her phone and saw me. The beam on her face was blinding and I loved how she always gave it to me. God, do I love my daughter.
