Saturday, June 15th, 2019: Knoxville, Tennessee.

Nelson hit the ground with a loud thud, his head now pounding even harder than when his father's fist made contact with his cheek. throbbing, throbbing, throbbing. that's all Nelson could feel.

"what did i tell you about leaving your clothes on the floor? huh? dumb fag," his father spat in his face.

Nelson could feel the tears burning in his eyes.

'don't let it fall,' he said to himself, 'don't let him see your weakness.'

his father only laughed at his poor son's state, and stumbled back up the stairs to ingest more alcohol.

Nelson shakily hoisted himself off the ground and limped out the door.

"i'm sorry," his father said.

"it won't happen again," his father said.

"i'll get my act together," his father said.

and yet, it never did happen.

it's only gotten worse.

the beatings, the drinking, the abuse. it's never ended.

this routine of Nelson taking his father's shit was on the regular now.

every goddamn day in the summer time.

Nelson continued down his driveway and onto the sidewalk, heading towards his older sister's home.

Nelson fled there whenever his father just became too much to bear. he loved his sister to death, they were best friends.

lately, she'd been his only friend. since summer break started on May 18th, Nelson had pushed away any and all friends he'd had. he didn't mean to ice them out, it had just been so emotionally draining, living with his father at home. he didn't really have it in him to socialize.

he'd been walking and crying for about 15 minutes before he came upon Bea's, his sister's, house.

he knocked on the door, keeping his head down, trying to hide the swelling bruise on his face.

Bea answered immediately, expecting it to be Nelson.

she opened the door with a smile, "Nellie! you've come for a visit?" she said, hoping it wasn't about their father.

he sniffled and shook his head, not making eye contact with his big sister.

her smile faded and her face contorted into a look of empathy and concern.

"Oh, Nellie," she said pulling him into a big tight hug, "you've gotta stop going back there."

he wrapped his arms around her waist as tight as he could and sobbed.

they stood there for a couple minutes while Nelson got out his emotions.

they pulled away, "thanks Bea," Nelson said, looking up at his sister.

she smiled, "you're welcome Nellie, i love you."

he smiled back, "i love you too."

"would you be down to come with me and grab ice cream?" Bea said excitedly.

Nelson grinned, "hell yeah."

ice cream was kind of their thing. whenever Nelson came to her crying because of their horrible father, they got ice cream and talked about whatever was on their minds. Bea has tried to get more personal about their family situation but Nelson had always brushed the topic off.

they laughed as Bea ran upstairs to apply some makeup, leaving Nelson downstairs to clean himself up.

they walked out the door and down the sidewalk, heading into town.

"Bea i think you should get a car," Nelson smirked.

"nice once Nellie," she said laughing.

"no i'm serious. we walk everywhere, and one of these days my shoes are really gonna give out."

Bea rolled her eyes, "that's because you keep buying those stupid Vans. they're uncomfortable and they barely last."

Nelson gasped and grabbed his heart dramatically, "blasphemy!"

Bea giggled and rolled her eyes once more, "you are such a 14 year old."

the pair continued on the route for about 20 minutes until they happened upon their favorite ice cream shop, Al's ice cream.

Nelson rolled his eyes as he saw one particular blonde cashier working the register, "you know you're gonna have to woman up and talk to her, right?"

Bea blushed, "i don't know what you're talking about."

Nelson rolled his eyes again as he held the door open for his sister.

the cashier working beamed when she saw the pair walk in, "Hello, welcome to Al's! can i help you guys or do you need a moment to decide?"

Nelson and Bea side eyed each other as Nelson smirked.

Bea only blushed brighter, "i think we're ready to order."

Nelson went first giving Bea time to collect herself, "i'll take 2 scoops of cotton candy in a bowl please."

"coming right up," the lady at the register replied.

"so you're still a 9 year old girl?" Bea teased.

"a manly one," Nelson said to his sister with a wink as he took his ice cream from the cashier.

Bea only pushed her brother lightly as he laughed and licked his ice cream.

"i'll have 2 scoops of brownie batter in a waffle cone please," Bea said with a grin.

the lady behind the counter grinned back and handed Bea her ice cream.

Bea waved to the cashier and turned to leave with Nelson when she realized he'd already wandered off without her.

Bea rolled her eyes, "that boy i swear," she muttered under her breath as she reached into her pocket to retrieve her phone.

"yo Bea, you're hella slow," Nelson answered the phone.

"where did you go you little-" Bea was stopped by the disconnection of the other line.

she let out a groan.

she loved her brother to death, but the little shit ran off a whole lot more than he should have.
