Even though I have homework to do, this was more important, finding out who killed Lachlan has become my top priority. We leave school as soon as the bell sounds, Deja looks nervous, she twiddles her thumbs fearfully and Eli walks in silence, earbuds in his ears and I see him sneak a glance or two at me.
"Do you really think this is a good idea?" Eli wonders, I look over at him.
"No, but its all I have at the moment, Sébastien will lead us to Lachlan's killer, end of story" I reply, Eli makes a face, he's unconvinced of my plan to discover who killed Lachlan. We reach the police station within twenty minutes, Deja opens the door and the scent of freshly printed paper and hand sanitizer fills my nostrils, Deja goes to find the police chief.
"Hi, Chief Holden" Deja says, a big smile spreads across her face. The police chief, who's last name is Holden, I guess, smiles at Deja.
"Hey kid, what brings you around here?" Chief Holden asks, looking over us, Eli waves shyly and I nod in respect.
"We want to ask Sébastien Bardin some questions, its for a project we're doing on criminology" Deja explains, I must say, for a goody-two-shoes, she can come up with a decently believable lie.
"We are?" Eli asks, I elbow him in the ribs, he groans than corrects himself.
"I mean, of course we are" he adds quickly after Chief Holden stares at him confusedly, to my surprise Chief Holden agrees and lets us talk with Bardin.
"Careful, he's a bit unpredictable" Chief Holden warns us and bids us good day.
"Well, that's reassuring" Eli says sarcastically as we make our way down the row of cells, until we find one occupied by a strange looking man. With a thick, head of black hair and beady green eyes that seem to stare through your soul.
"Sébastien Bardin?" I say.
"Who's asking?" the man retorts, standing from where he sits and approaching the bars of his cell.
"The kid who's brother you killed" I shoot back, Bardin doubles over in wheezy laughter.
"You-you think I. . ." he trails off because he's laughing so much, he finally comes too and wipes invisible tears from his eyes.
"No, I didn't kill Lachlan."
"You had his phone at one point, you must've known him, he trusted you with it" Bardin laughs again.
"Who said anything about him giving it to me willingly?" Bardin asks dryly, I clench my fists, rage pumps through my veins.
"So you were associated with Lachlan. Do you know how he died?" Deja demands, holding out her notebook like a journalist, ready to write down anything Bardin says or does.
"Like I'd say anything to you, missy" Bardin spits, Deja frowns furiously.
"But, I'm in the mood for some entertainment, so lets have some fun" Bardin adds, he locks eyes with me. Bardin smiles manically, sending chills down my spine and anger through my veins.
"Mark, calm down" Eli says, his voice is soft and wavers a little, its not hard to tell he's terrified.
"I am calm."
"No you aren't" Deja says, agreeing with Eli. Bardin seems to be enjoying this a little to much, and now its pissing me off.
"What do you know about Lachlan Spier?" I demand, Bardin cracks a toothy smile, he has at least two front teeth missing and one metallic tooth.
"Not much, he didn't talk to me a lot, but he did associate with the others more" Bardin says, examining his nails, acting as though he's bored and distracted.
