A Masquerade Ball

     The Royal Family has been in power for one hundred and fifty years, the longest that a single bloodline has held the throne for in this kingdom. These years have not been without their complications: wars, economic decline, and a rise in crime have resulted in civil unrest, and many disapprove of the oligarchical regime.

     However, tonight is for celebration! These festivities, originally intended to impress nobles and win support for the royalty, have been (begrudgingly) opened to the public. This is an atypical move for royalty, but it is nevertheless welcome.

Everyone is expected to wear masks except for the royals, in the hopes that royals will treat commoners and nobles alike for a single night. However, nothing stops a royal from donning a mask, and commoners may very well remove theirs in an attempt to be perceived as royalty. Vigilance will be critical for all involved parties.

Criminals plan to capitalize on this opportunity, and guards are determined to keep that from happening. Magic is completely banned tonight for safety purposes, and violators will be charged with treason and whipped.

You enter the ballroom in the late evening. Through the skylights in the ceiling, you can see the first stars of the night. White marble has been polished to a shine, and candles are scattered delicately around the edges of the room. When it gets darker, moonlight will cast a spotlight on the dancers.

It is serene, but an ominous feeling tells you to escape before the night reaches its peak. Nothing good will come of this night, and yet you are compelled to stay, an invisible hand leading you towards the dance floor. Refreshments are off to the side, where some milder-mannered guests are watching the events of the night transpire.

What will you make of this night? Only time will tell.
