It was almost lunch time before I finally walked into the precinct and could get an update on the situation.
"So, Zebowitz and his crew were watching the back where they expected all the activity. I was in the front as a "just in case" scenario." Danny explained. "Suddenly, I heard gunshots, then one of the garage doors went up. It was the Jester! He waved at me and took off as I drew my gun and made my way into the garage. I didn't know what I'd find, so I felt that I had to let him go."
"Shit. That must've been hard."
"Yeah. But, bigger fish to fry, you know?"
"I hear you. So, what did you find when you entered the garage?" I asked.
"Zebowitz and his guys came in the back and we found the two-man crew propped up in the corner. They'd apparently been tazed. We were able to get all the evidence needed to shut the place down."
"Zebowitz must be thrilled. They've been gunnin' for this place for a long time."
"Yeah, but the thing is, the press showed up right away. Sounds like the whole thing was leaked just like it was a year ago."
"I remember that," I said. "Ruined their bust, if I recall, which is why it's taken this long." I paused for a few heartbeats. "So, I guess the question is, how did the Jester know about this sting?"
"That's the question of the day. I'm thinking that things got leaked to the press again and, in the process, the Jester heard about it."
"That implies that the press is in on the Jester gig. You think that's likely?"
"I don't know, but it's the closest thing we've had to lead yet. I think it's worth digging around."
I knew that there was nothin' to find, but I also knew that we had to be doin' somethin'. Goin' after the press would be a nice distraction. "Where do you want to start?"
"Well, who had the most to gain from the Jester?"
I laughed, "All of the press has somethin' to gain. Things like this keep them employed."
"True. But, who has the most to gain... or lose?"
I thought for a moment, tryin' to concoct a likely story. "I think that our rookie, Ms. Rodriguez has quite a bit to gain."
"And, I've heard that Mr. Davis' paper is getting ready to go under. A reporter with this on his resume could look good to another."
"Sounds like two likely places to start. Though, I don't think Rodriguez was around last year for the leak. So, start with Davis, maybe?"
"A plan. Let's go talk to the Lieutenant, get some food, then head to a paper."
Mr. Davis, AKA Jerry, was runnin' around his office obviously annoyed with our visit, especially since we made it clear that we weren't interested in givin' inteviews. We were trailin' behind him, tryin' to ask questions.
