"BUT HE IS A NERD-" Cindy cried out in frustration, how did she NOT notice that she went to school with a superhero?
Abe was in the corner of crisis, beside the wooden bookshelf, suffering from a mild migraine. Last year that dude had a crush on Liz, and practically the entire school knew that! How did he manage to keep a secret for so long in the first place?
Like dear Abe and Cindy, most of the occupants of the room were either shocked out of the realm of living because Peter Parker was Spider Man or were hyperventillating in exhuliration because Peter Parker was Spider Man.
Then there was Flash.
On one hand, there was the resident vigillante, who could carry a bus like a wafer and web up 40 criminals in like 3 seconds, on the other hand was the nerdy kid from school who had been taking beatings from him since he was 11.
Flash couldn't decide if he should start working on the best apology of the century or move to Antarctica.
Pepper clicked her tongue in disapproval, "Last Thursday, Peter told me he entered his homeroom through the window."
Rhodey blinked in confusion, "And that is relevant because...?"
"His class is on the second floor."
"Oh."
Betty, still slightly disconcerted, drawled "But why would he keep it a secret? Tony Stark got a like million more fans after his 'I am Iron Man' speech!!"
Rhodey gruntled with unease and shot Pepper an apprehensive look. They both knew that it wasn't their place to answer that question, along with the countless more that were sure to come.
"Well..." she started, "I think it would be for the best if you asked Peter himself."At that prospect, many of the adolescents ineptly stuttered and visibly withered.
All year long, if Peter Parker hadn't been their subject of hushed whispers or perpetual ridiculing, he was just another face in the crowd.
He was always different. Another awkward teenager with a considerably small social circle and way too many educational jokes up his sleeve. While most who attended their school came from wealthy families in higher sections of the society, he was the prodigy who got a full scholarship and always had straight As.
But going and TALKING to the boy you barely know or crossed the entire year about his extracurricular activities that somehow involved hanging around the resident billionaire and climbing walls in spandex?
Midtown high certainly had decisions to make.
"As much as I like seeing the Matheletes have an existential crisis while trying to calculate their stupidity, I'm pretty sure the tour guide said something about getting back on time" MJ snapped her book shut and stood up.
MJ had been... observing Peter for quite a while. It was only three red bulls, four hours of Buzzfeed Unsolved and three sleepovers later that she figured it out.
But even as she casually sat with the boys at lunch with her nose buried inside some book, and occasionally got invited to their biweekly night outs, she knew that there was no place for her in this story.
Peter told Ned about his Spiderman-ing, then why not her?
MJ's overkilling apprehension was cut off by Pepper voicing her agreement, and telling the students to meet up with the others in the lobby.
Abraham sullenly trudged towards the door and pushed down on it. But something was not right.
The door didn't budge.
"It won't open!" He blurted.
"Are you pulling it instead of pushing it?" Cindy shoved him out of the way and tugged on the door handle.
"Friday?" Rhodey looked up to the ceiling apprehensively. Something was wrong."I apologize for the inconvenience, but you cannot leave the room at the moment." the AI lamented.
"Why the heck not!" flash cried out.
"The compound is on lockdown." she stoically replied.
Pepper grimaced, "Friday, why weren't we alerted? and what do you mean by lockdown?"
"My protocols don't allow me to announce critical alerts publically in the presence of minors. It is a part of the 'babysitting spiders' protocol library, however-"
Friday's lilting response was cut off by Flash's exclaims, "OH MY GOSH IT'S PEPPER POTTS- I'M STANNING IN THE SAME ROOM AS HER THIS IS THE BEST TIMELINE-"
Rhodey facepalmed and mumbled about sending Peter to a brighter school, and Pepper ignored them and put on her business forefront, "Disable that immediately. Why is the compound on lockdown, Friday?"
"My servers have been hacked and my scanners detect 4 intruders."
