The annoying, steady vibrations of my bedside table finally cause my eyelids to flutter open. Reaching in the darkness I see my mothers calling. "Hello? Mom it's so early, is everything ok?" I hear the excitement in my mothers voice as she cheerily replies. "It's the big day! Happy birthday, my sweet pumpkin." I groan into my arm as I sit up to check the time. "Mom it's 7 am! You couldn't have waited until 9?" I hear my mother shuffling about her house, probably preparing herself and the house of the company she's invited over and is forcing me to join tonight for dinner.
"Don't forget to be here at 6 pm sharp young lady. You may be 24 now, but I can still ground you!" I hear the amusement in her voice as she says it. Laughing lightly I agree that I'll be there, we exchange I love you's and we hang up. Tossing my covers off me I swing my legs to the side of the bed yawning before giving my kitten, Artemis, a small tummy scratch and get up to start my day.
Hearing Artemis' paws hit the floor and meow sleepily after me as I walk to the kitchen to start my coffee, I make her breakfast before making mine. I grab my overnight oats from the fridge and my blueberries, walking back to the counter. The weather today seems to be dreary, but that's how I've always honestly preferred it. The cold and rain, the best air you ever feel.
We finish our breakfast and Artemis pads off to the water bowl as I toss our dishes into the dishwasher. "Shit" I say out loud as I drop my spoon onto the floor. I know I shouldn't swear so much, I'm an aunt now, but it's a force of habit.
Growing up we had strict parents. My dad was in the military and my mom worked for the university medical center ordering supplies. I don't know how much my life would have changed if my sister and I hadn't met in that apartment pool that summer. I smile fondly at the memory as I pull the slim hair band off my wrist and grab my hair into a messy bun as I walk to the bathroom.
