As the blackness recedes once more, I realise the shards in me are no longer metaphorical.
The impact seems to have demolished the windscreen before me, sending a significant portion of it into my chest.
In the trees that surround the water, I see a girl even younger than Cay.
Someone needs to save him, and I'm clearly done for, so I reach up to my necklace and pull it off, using the last of my strength.
The girl in the trees runs out into the water, towards me, and takes the shining necklace. Her pale green eyes seem sad, like she's never seen a death before.
She nods and disappears again.
I'm done now. I did what I was meant to. I didn't save the world, but I saved a life.
It seems peaceful down here.
I'm glad I can stay right here forever.....
