Liz trudged down the dirty road that led to her new-ish house. She and her mom had moved into town the other day. Liz was still puzzled about the whole thing. It was quite unusual for her family to wake up one day and decide to move to the desert. But here she was, living in Nightvale, walking past the dog park, and wondering what to have for lunch.
Nightvale. That was a weird name for a place, wasn't it? Liz had made it to her house, and was leaping up the stone steps that led to the door. She fumbled for her key, and once she had found it, she hurriedly smashed it into the lock. Of course, this made it take even longer to open. Liz jammed the key around until the door finally slid open.
She entered, closing the door with her foot. Her steps echoed around the empty house. She grabbed some money and headed out again. She decided to go to Big Rico's because apparently the pizza there was like the best or something. Every time Liz had asked anyone where to go for lunch, they just smiled and said,
"No one makes a slice like Big Rico's." Which, she had to admit, made her slightly scared of "Rico". But she was so hungry. She rounded a corner, and--
SMASH!
Liz was knocked to the ground, and the contents of her bag were spilled everywhere. She quickly collected everything together, and stood up indignantly. She found herself staring at a boy, about her age. He had dark brown hair that curved up at the edges, electric green eyes, and barely tanned skin. He got up, brushed himself off, and seemed as though he were about to say something, but Liz was already walking again. He turned to look at her, puzzled.
"Wait!" He called out to her. Liz turned.
"What." She didn't have time for this. She was hungry. That, and the fact that Liz wasn't exactly a "people's person." In kindergarten she may or may not have bitten a few kids on the first day of school. It's not like she went around biting people, that was kindergarten. But she still didn't like talking to strangers.
"You forgot this." He carefully held out a pen, as if it were the most valuable thing in the universe.
"Oh..thanks." Liz came closer, and took the pen carefully. It seemed like snatching it away from him would be inappropriate. She stuffed it in her bag.
"So..my name's Cameron." He stuck out his hand briskly. Liz took it carefully.
"Uh...Liz." They shook hands. Cameron thought for a second, then spoke again.
"Hey, you're that girl who just moved in, right? I moved in last month." He seemed so eager. And he had moved in recently too?
"Uh yea." She grimaced. Why do all my sentences start with 'uh'? But Cameron was smiling broadly.
"Welcome to Nightvale." Before Liz had a chance to reply, Cameron was gone, walking the other way.
