personality: Kate seems to have two predominant personality traits, and they depend on her mood - she is either a reclused and depressive artist whom doesn't leave her room, or a sarcastic and witty smartàss full of life and energy. Unbeknownst to Kate, this is because she suffers (undiagnosed) from her mother's inherited frontotemporal dementia, which has begun early in her case. While Kate can be outspoken, jittery, and in all cases adventurous and headstrong, there are times when she's antisocial and prone to outbursts of irritation, and sometimes suffers from severe anxiety and panic attacks (though these are rare). She sometimes also doesn't think things through, especially when she's excitable. She's fiercely loyal to her loved ones, and tends to put their safety above her own. She's very intelligent and tactical, and is good with both practical and social skills.

backstory: Kate Gilmore was born Katherine Elaine Gilmore, to parents Hank and Claudia. During her childhood, the family lived in a small Californian town where her father was the sheriff and her mother was a florist. Unfortunately, when Kate turned five, her mother's dementia was detected and the older woman's health began to deteriorate fast. Claudia passed away when Kate was only eight, and since the girl has been raised by her father. Due to this, Kate was a bit of a tomboy: she loved working on cars, doing things outdoors, and was definitely not in tune with her girly femininity. She learned about her period and sex from an illustrated book, for crying out loud.
Recently, Kate's dad was transferred to Forks as the new sheriff when Charlie Swan retired. Her father met and quickly fell for Tiffany Call, and the two are now engaged. Hank and Kate just moved in to Embry and Tiffany's house on the Reservation.
