Torrent must've thought all the interaction we had was enough for the entire because of he didn't visit in the morning. I decided to skip breakfast and go on a run. Well, more like a jog...to my class...because I was late... I walked quickly. Okay, maybe I wasn't as fit as I thought I was. I made it to my class and jogged up the stairs in between classes.
I made it all the way through the day doing my activity of daily living at an accelerated pace. That's exercise, right?
"Girl, what are you doing? The bake sale isn't until June. There's no reason to be running." My friend Remi said.
She was also like me. Well, she was like the black sassy version of me while I was just an asshole. "I'm trying to burn off all my winter weight. I've been a little too lenient on myself this year."
Remi pursed her lips as she looked at me up and down. "I hate to say this to you but I don't think that's winter weight. We've been this size since middle school. All we did was get taller."
I clamped my mouth shut as I jogged in place trying to hit my knees on the bottoms of my hands. "All the more reason to get this stubborn weight off. How are we going to get hot boyfriends from the swim team if we look like whales?" I said over my shoulder looking at her.
That suddenly got her on her feet and she was jogging in place beside me. I smiled coyly led the way to our next class while we took more steps than that were necessary. When people looked at us weird I would just give them a big smile and then they would laugh. It didn't matter to me what they thought of me before, it didn't matter to me now.
We had a mandatory math class just before we went to the weight room. There were a lot of men in the gym. So many muscles made me feel overwhelmed with joy. I couldn't stop smiling through the whole workout.
"You look like a creeper when you smile like that," Remi warned me. While she finished her last rep of calf exercises.
"As long as they don't look like my dad, I'd like totally date a guy from here."
Remi gave a sarcastic smile as she stood up from the bench. "I don't think any of the guys in here even know we exist. They're just looking in the mirror at themselves."
"Yeah, you're right. We should go swimming in the pool instead, that way the guys have to look at us!" I said enthusiastically.
Remi's eyes widened and she shook her head quickly. "Oh, no, no, that's where I draw the line. I already know what my body looks like here. I don't want a guy in a speedo seeing more than I'd care to show!"
"It's not like we'll be wearing bikinis. We'll just borrow someone piece swimsuits from the lost and found. It'll be fun!"
"Nope," Remi refused shaking her head. "There's no way I'm getting in the pool. I won't do it!"
I let out an exasperated sigh and gave in. "Fine, no pool. Can we at least go watch them in swim practice?"
She agreed to that. After we took a shower in the locker room we got dressed in our normal clothes. Sweatshirts and sweatpants were part of our day to day uniform. Now we had a reason to wear them.
We sat on the bleachers looking down at the pool. They were just doing laps but it was fun for us to watch. Remi and I would bet on which swimmer would be the fastest in the lane. Everyone knew that the fastest swimmers were in the middle lane and they always went first.
There were two swimmers that were really competitive. Whether it was using the kickboard or doing any kind of stroke, they were always switching position in the lane. One would start to go ahead and then the other one would push harder and stay ahead of the heat.
"I wish we could go swimming with them too," I complained leaning over the rail.
"We would be so far behind though," Remi frowned sitting down next to me."I just want one of them to hug me. So lean and powerful..." She began to drool over them.
The end of the practice came and the swimmers started climbing out of the pool. When the two competitive swimmers got out of the pool, I almost choked on my drool.
It was Torrent and his obnoxious partner. I turned my back to the pool and tried to make myself as small as possible. My heart was beating so fast. Why was he here?!
"What are you doing?" Remi raised an eyebrow at me.
I looked out of the hole in my arms and saw that he was gone. I let out a sigh of relief and put my back against the bar. "That was so close," I panted.
"I've never been more embarrassed to be your friend," Remi said through her clenched teeth as she nudged my elbow. I looked over at her and then realized that Torrent and his friend were standing on the other side of her.
I panicked and grabbed Remi, holding her against my chest.
"Can we sit here?" His friend asked.
It took us a moment to even speak up. "Yeah," I said at last.
They sat down on the bench while they opened up their bags and pulled snacks out. I couldn't stop looking. Torrent even ate raisins and dried cherries!
Remi nudged me with her elbow harshly and looked at me harshly. She mouthed the words, "Do you know them?"
Yeah, I knew them. I knew them so well that I wanted to run away. I didn't feel like sharing how I knew them so I lied and shook my head shrugging.
Remi was feeling brave and turned towards them with a smile. "Excuse me, would you guys like to go get ice cream with us?"
They glanced at each other. "I'm lactose intolerant," Torrent's friend bluffed.
"I have to go to work in five minutes," Torrent excused himself.
I shot a glare at him but he didn't even react. I stood up in front of the three of them on the bleachers and put my hands on my hips. "What's going on here? You suddenly decide to just sit by us, that's extremely suspicious."
"We sat down to eat." Torrent stood up putting his food back in his bag. "We're going now." He looked back at his friend and then tried to walk past me. I reached out to grab his towel from around his neck but he grabbed my wrist and stopped me.
"You don't have to touch someone to get their attention," he reminded me. "I heard you talking shit about me."
Everything I said in the past twenty-four hours came to my mind. I squinted as I tried to find something bad I stated about him. "That's very probable. What are you going to do about it?"
He bared his teeth as he took a step towards me. His grip tightened and I couldn't withstand the pain so I accidentally yelped. "I'll see you tonight," he growled warningly and let go.
I rubbed my wrist sorely and glared at his back.
"I'm so sorry about him," his friend said and tenderly grasped my hand for a second before running after his friend.
