Papa was gone before I woke up, with my sleepy eyes still adjusting to the light that shone in my room. Its 9am.
“oh shit!”
Am late for the biggest job interview of my life. Why have I slept so late. I will blame papa for that. How could he do this to me.
Getting a job in Nigeria is an entire different phase in life. now I have an opportunity after three years I can't believe I am going to miss this opportunity because of what. I Overslept?
I rushed to the kitchen where obviously I have to prepare something myself. I calculated in my mind the time it would take me to prepare the food.
“just drop the food, its not the first time you’ve gone hungry for a day.” I said to myself
I went to take my bath after deciding not to eat and then, the worst happened. There is no water. This is not happening to me right? I Rushed outside to check the tap and obviously no water. Why would I even think of checking water there when water starts to gush from that tap around evening time. I panicked.
"I am definitely not going to this interview on time." I surrendered “I will just tell them it’s the traffic jam around my area then.” That reason works every time.
I am seriously in panic but I have to calm down and see if I can get a solution to my dilemma. Okay I am going to do the inevitable. I am going to ask Mama Ejima to help me with some water.
Mama ejima is the woman in your community that always to know what you are up to everyday. She is a nosy woman that succeeds only in gossip.
She has been known to scatter marriages and land us children in trouble many times. She is a religious woman; a woman that wants us to think she is religious. She has all over her house the sign of the cross and Latin chants and incense and flowers and images of Mary and the baby Jesus.
I am now standing on her front door with her morning incense purring to my nose. The smell is unpleasant.
I knock and she opens up.“good morning ma” I say scared.
“morning” she replied while she looks at my night gown that I still have on.
“I was wondering ma if you can help me with water to bathe. I have this interv…”
Wait I can't tell her I have an interview, that would be the talk of the town if I don’t get the job.“I have a very important work to do in town but daddy just used up all the water?”
“I don’t have too much water ooo” she stressed.
“please ma” I started to beg.
“give me your bucket”
“Yes! I got water, I take my bath now lets go to work. Now lets go for the interview.” I said to myself trying to encourage me.
