A few days after Rye was born, the leaders of each province met in a non-disclosed area to discuss the impending matter of the planet's crumbling economy.

Items that were considered extremely valuable soon became worthless. Under the rule of a grueling dictatorship, the citizens of the planet were forced into doing cheap labor everyday of their lives until they died, restricted to only one child per couple.

Life wasn't good. An understanding flooded through the minds of the people.

Death is more welcome than life on this world.

Streets that were once seemingly paved with gold, were now laden with dead bodies, victims of the harsh conditions or maybe people who'd simply had enough. Enough of going to sleep every night hungry and afraid. Enough of living in fear of execution because you stole bread for a child you didn't even want.

For ten years the planet didn't get any better. Rye was often woken by the cries of a mother whose only tie to the living was him. Though he was only ten the harshness of the world he lived in forced his brain to adapt and grow. Rye knew what he had to do in order for him and his mother to survive.

His earliest memories were of stealing and scavenging, searching dead bodies for anything of value. It wasn't fun but it was what it was.

What he felt for his mother couldn't be described as love. More like familiar obligation. She was the whore of the town. Ready to sleep with anything that breathed for any amount of money. His mother often came home at night delirious and unable to walk. It was only a matter of time before she became pregnant.

And that was exactly what happened. She got pregnant.

And it ruined everything.

She couldn't leave the house, in fear of being spotted by the guards constantly patrolling the streets. Having a second child was punishable by death, both for the child and the mother. Large men came by everyday demanding her services, nearly pulling the door of its hinges.

When she gave birth it was a beautiful baby girl with an adventurous smile and a glint in her eye. Another pound of flesh he would have to care for, steal for and most probably die for.

He had to work three times harder to supply for the greedy child, which he didn't think was at all practical. Rye wanted to kill it before it started to really cause trouble and force him to take up the same occupation as his mother.

Three more years passed with them all living in fear. Not quite peaceful but satisfactory.

Rye knew the illusion of contentment would soon be over. Three year old children are curious and wild.

Curious and wild enough to wander out of the house during the day.

Curious and wild enough to get caught.

Curious and wild enough to die along with her mother.

Curious and wild enough to leave him alone in the world.
