Unit 11

Three months later Rye still had no clue as to why he was targeted.

Konnor had completely healed a few days after the simulation event and was back to normal but unlike Rye he was sure his injury was just the result of a malfunction of some sort - nothing to worry about.

But Rye worried. He worried but he didn't let it consume his life.

Over the course of three months Rye'd focused a lot of effort on making friends and was pleased to find out that Micheal - the boy who'd worn the pink jumper at dinner - was his roommate.

Every time he entered his room after lessons they talked and Rye slowly found himself beginning like to the guy. He knew when Rye wanted to be spoken to and respected that. He found him calming to to talk to and also a nice presence to have around.

Classes had been as expected. The teachers weren't too strict but they knew what they were doing, always walking around and critiquing when something was wrong and sending nods to the students they thought were doing well in the lessons.

It was a nice change from the harsh training camps, Rye assumed it was because the teachers already knew they were the best - the classes were merely a way of highlighting who was better than the best, who would be selected for lorias.

The combat classes were also an excellent way to observe who was the best at what they did. Unlike his own arena fight, due to larger numbers of applicants the other provinces could afford to split the fights into categories, allowing the participants to apply with what they were best at.

Where Rye had been able to pick his own weapon the other categories were more specific. It was either:

Archery and Sniping,

Computer Skills,

Knife Work,

Or Hand to Hand Combat.

Although Rye had trained hard in all of those things, spending all of your time practicing one skill is better than dividing your time to do different things.

Konnor for example, was amazing with his twin knives and hand to hand combat but couldn't arch or snipe to save his life.

Though strictly speaking, one would do anything to save their life.

Rye was pleased that he'd identified the correct people to be friends with all those months ago.

While they were training he found himself impressed by each of their skills.

Delilah was clearly the best with guns and Penelopes strongest suit was arching. Tyler could snipe and Micheal was particularly good with computers - he'd also spent some time learning how to construct impromptu weapons which was and amazing addition to the team.

The team.

Rye had started referring to them as that ever since he'd seen them all in action - individually and together. All of them seemed to just mesh together. They had the right balance of skills and smart to make a team successful as well as a solid connection team members needed.

"Rye!"

The sound of Delilahs voice brought him back to reality.

He looked around at the others at the table who all had their heads turned to him.

After looking at all of them for a second he set his gaze imploringly to Delilahs.

"Yes?" He asked.

"I was saying that the headmaster asked to meet all of us tomorrow morning after 3 a.m training." She was grinning, clearly looking forward to the meeting

"By us you mean?"

"You, me, Micha, Lopy, Ty and Konnor." Rye let out an inaudible sigh of relief, now he was confident that they were going to be deployed on their first loria. In some ways he was happy that he'd finally be able to leave the Academy grounds, although he'd only been there for a few months he'd been aching for something exciting to happen and by the looks of it the others were happy too.

"Ok," and with that they all went back to their previous conversations - by now they all knew that once Rye said ok, he was done with talking and they never took offence at the fact that he rarely spoke during breakfast and dinner.

Around half an hour and a lot of mindless conversation later they were all finished and ready to go to bed and had already started to get up and leave the hall. Once they reached the entrance they said their good nights and split up, each of them going to their selective rooms.

Half of them going one way and the other half going the other.
