I stood in the corner across from the apartment all night, waiting. I was starting to become unsure on whether or not they were even coming back. Maybe he didn't live there, maybe I was wasting my time. Eventually, morning would come, and I'd have to leave. Until then, however, I would wait.
Hours passed as I waited in the alley, and finally I heard walking down the sidewalk. I peered around the corner to see the tall boy with black hair walking towards the apartment, arm-in-arm with his shorter blonde friend. As they neared, I stepped back into the darkness, making sure the shadows completely enveloped me. I'd moved too quickly, though, since the man's neck craned towards my hideout. I couldn't hear him as she spoke to his friend, still looking over here. Did he see me? His friend shook her head, and led her into the apartment.
Quickly, I ran across the street and let myself through the door before it closed. The two had just turned around the corner, and I waited a couple of seconds before walking to the end of the hallway. Peering around the corner, I saw them walk into the elevator. I walked over to see it was going to the second floor, and pulled open the door to the stairs that was next to the elevator before I ran up them two at a time. I searched through the small window in the door to see the girls stepping out of the elevator, ducking as they walked passed. Opening the door just enough to watch them walk down the hallway, I surveyed them stop at a door as the tall one fumbled for his keys.
Apartment 210, I thought to myself, and closed the door to prevent them from seeing me. They had both seemed so tired, I was sure they would be going right to sleep. Still, I'd wait to make sure I didn't walk into the place to an apartment full of awake residents.
Two hours passed as I waited in the staircase. If anything, I was really patient; I had to be. Pushing myself up, I walked into the hallway and down to apartment 210. I pulled the lockpicking tools from the pocket of my cargo shorts and squatted down, slowly starting to work at the deadbolt. Once I had gotten that open, I worked on the lock on the door handle. A few minutes later, I heard a small pop, signaling that the door was ready to be opened.
I slowly turned the knob, and opened the door. It was pitch black, so I made an effort to get through the door without opening it too much. I quietly closed the door behind me, and gave my eyes a moment to adjust to the darkness. Creeping over to the first door on my left which was cracked open, I slowly opened it more. The blue light from a TV screen illuminated the room in blue light; neither of the two were in here. This room is familiar. I put the door back to its slightly ajar state, and skipped the door directly to the right. Somehow I knew that was a bathroom, and walked to the next door.
This entire place was extremely familiar.
This door had been closed, so I successfully opened it without making any sound. There was no TV, but the curtains were thin enough to allow the city light to slightly light up the room. I walked around the bed and peered down at the face of the girl who was fast asleep in it. The blonde hair surrounding her head disappointed me, only because it wasn't who I was looking for.
