I went to the restroom in between first and second period I was about to come out, when I heard Maria and Riley talking. This is usual, but when the were talking about me it's a totally different subject entirely. I decided to listen, though I hate snooping.
"What's the matter, you guys just looked at each other?" Riley asked
I heard Maria sighing, "I was too long... We looked at each other too long."
"Oh I see what you mean," Riley said.
"Josh keeps acting like he really does love me but he keeps saying its just a joke. I don't know what's going on with him!" Maria shouted the last part then started crying, "Why? Why."
"Maria you have to dry those tears. If you are sure he loves you he will show it," Riley must have been comforting her because Maria's crying slowly stopped.
I put my back against the wall trying to wrap my head around the situation. I had to make sure that I knew what's going on.
"How do I know if he really loves me?" Maria sniffled.
There was a long silence then Riley finally said, "He will ask you out, or something like that. Maybe prom?"
That was it, I thought, it will show that I love her, but prom is in two days. How am I gonna ask her in two days?
"Ok we should get to class," Maria managed.
"Yeh so we can see your dream boy," Riley joked.
The sniffles stopped and I heard their footsteps receding down the hall. I opened the door to. The bathroom slowly to make sure they were gone. How could this happen? I feel sad for Maria but happy at the same time! I could show Maria how I feel! My optimism suddenly got destroyed for two reasons: one, prom was in two days, and two, second period was in one minute. It became that my only thought was RUN! I sprinted so much that I had to have lost some calories. I made up the alibi that I forgot my backpack in first period. I finally got to class told my alibi and plopped down in my seat breathing really hard.
I looked over at Maria who looked back and smiled. I could see, from her eyes, that she was pleading me to ask and if I hadn't listened to their conversation in the hall I wouldn't have known what she was trying to tell me with her eyes.
The class, biology, began and since it was getting close to the last day, we we're dissecting frogs. I am partners with Maria since at the beginning of the school year we both had picked each other. I looked at her and her eyes were puffy red from crying. I had to make it look like I wasn't there.
"Were you crying?" I asked.
She wiped her eyes, "No, I just... um... got sand in my eyes, that's all."
"I'll text you after school to figure out the story eh?" I said.
She sighed, "Ok"
In that instant I had an idea, an amazing idea that could change everything between us.
"Hey," I nudged her, "I finally figured out how to ask."
Maria looked at me, "Ask what?"
I smiled, "Ask someone to prom."
She looked away, "Oh"
"Don't worry," I said, "you'll love her."
Right after school, I ran to a flower shop to buy some flowers. This is the best idea ever. I wrote on the note:
- Dear Maria,
Would you go to prom with me? I am in your contacts so just text this number.
Love- Then I put my number.
I put the note in the flowers and ran to Maria's house. I put the vase down on her front porch, rang the door bell, and ran home. I got to my room and started doing homework when almost instantly my phone buzzed. I got a huge grin and opened my phone. Thank god it was Maria.
Maria: Josh open your freaking curtains.
My grin grew larger as I opened my curtains. There Maria was crying tears of joy as she texted into her phone...
Maria: Yes Josh. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
I was laughing of joy.
Me: Did you like the flowers?
Maria laughed.
Maria: Yes Josh, I liked the flowers.
Me: Awwwwww I made you cry?😘
Maria: Yes you did!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I laughed.
Maria: I'm gonna go tell my parents!
Me: me to but I don't want them to make a big deal!!!
Maria: bye love you lol
When I saw that I knew what to do.
Me: love you too
I told my parents and they made a big deal.
My mom cried, "My boy is growing up!"
I rolled my eyes, "Mom..."
"And he is going on his first prom..."
"Mom..."
"On his first date..."
"Mom!"
"And he's gonna kiss a girl!!!"
"MOM!!!" I yelled.
She stopped crying, and wiped her tears, "Sorry."
My Dad just had a straight face and asked, "What are you two doing after?"
I gave him a confused look, "We're gonna walk home together. Maybe with Tom and his date, and Jack and Riley. Why are you asking?"
My Mom raised her eyebrows at my Dad, apparently she didn't know what was going on either.
"Ok," my Dad said, "I'm just asking, because if you go to her house or here and you need some protection..." He then pulled out a hand wipe package but it was actually called a condo....
"DAD!!!!" I yelled.
He raised both arms and smiled, "I'm just looking out for my boy!"
I took it anyway just in case I had do anything unplanned. I really had no idea what would happen after prom. Hopefully something unplanned happens.
