I stood, legs shaking, waiting for my name to be called.
Everyone's eyes scanned the first years as if trying to guess what house they would be sorted into.
Every first year had some idea of what house that would be, but not me.
The group of first years I sat on the train with; Harry, Ron and Hermione, has their heart set on Gryffindor.
Draco Malfoy and his clan were certain to be sorted into Slytherin.
But me, I hadn't the faintest.
I've always been smart and a book nerd like a Ravenclaw. Just like I've always been brave and daring like a Gryffindor.
I've always been loyal and hard working like a Hufflepuff.
And ambitious and cunning like a Slytherin.
Honestly, I was excited to see what traits would win through.
"Klara Shepard!" Bellowed Dumbledore.
Finally, my name had been called.
Slowly but surely I made my way onto the great stage and tried not to focus on the hundreds of eyes eyeing me up and down.
A small girl with blonde bunches scuttled onstage and placed the Sorting Hat on my head.
"Deep breaths Klara."
The sorting Hat began to speak. "Argh you seem to have some very special traits. Mind of a Ravenclaw, heart of a Hufflepuff, bravery of Gryffindor, ambition of a Slytherin."
For a few moments the sorting hat said nothing.
People began to become uneasy, shuffling their feet and looking around the room.
Then it began to crease up and yell, "Slytherin..NO...Ravenclaw....I MEAN...Gryffindor definitely Gryffindor....Hufflepuff!"
What was happening! This can't be right? This isn't supposed to happen.
"TAKE ME OFF PLEASE! I BEG YOU! TAKE ME OFF!"
Professor Mcgonagall ran onstage and yanked the hat off my head still screaming.
Dumbledore grabbed me by the shoulder and beckoned for me to follow him.
Without wasting another second I scrambled off my seat and hurried after him.
Every pair of eyes were on me as I left. Some where frightened but most were curious.
What had I done to the Sorting Hat?
The door slammed shut behind me but that didn't stop Dumbledore from racing ahead.
Finally, we came to what I believed to be, his office.
"Come inside." He told me.
In any other situation I would of been shocked by the beauty of the room, but my mind was too shocked about what happened in the Great Hall to even think of a thing like that.
Dumbledore sat down on a chair and gave me a look to sit as well.
"Well Klara. I'm sure you're filled with many questions. But before you ask I want you to know that so am I. Never before have I seen such a thing. The Sorting Hat has been designed to always know what house a person belongs in. It's very unusual to find an exception."
An exception? What was he saying?
"Have I broken the hat?" I blurt out.
Dumbledore gives me an amused look before answering. "No you haven't. You've given it quite a shock I'll tell you that but it'll recover."
