After only a few minutes, the vehicle stopped and Brand was ordered out of the car. They were in front of a sheer cliff face. Brand looked it up and down. Unless he was missing it, there was no opening, not even a crevice, and surely they did not mean to climb it. The big guy came around the front of the van and stood pointing at the wall with what looked like a small remote. In turn, the rock wall transformed before their eyes into a waterfall, a road stretching out into nothingness, a forest of trees. Kirey approached the man and grabbed the device from his hands. Pushing another button, a small cave entrance about 7 feet wide by 9 feet high appeared.

"Get back in the car and send the driver to me," she said to the man. He skulked away. When the driver walked up Kirey whispered in his ear. The driver nodded. Poor dumb bastard, Brand thought. The big guy was toast.

"Let's go," Leah said, "We walk from here."

Brand was prodded ahead of them and they were plunged into darkness as they entered the cave. He stopped a few feet in and Leah handed around to him a flashlight – and a small gun. He stuffed the gun into his belt quickly, covered it with his shirt and turned the flashlight on. They were on a paved road. After walking several hundred more feet, they veered left at a fork and the path gradually narrowed and sloped downward. Before long he saw a light ahead of them. As the cave brightened, Brand shut off the flashlight and tucked it in front of the gun. Leah was about to take a big chance and Jenn Slater's life hung in the balance. All that was left to do was to get them out before Leah carried out the final stage of her plan.
