Chapter One: Celebrations
The 74th Hunger Games.
There were four Victors.
Two from the first and wealthiest District.
Two from the last and poorest District.
From the first: Marvel Sanford and Lace (also known as Lucy) Dime.
From the last: Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen.
What happened in the 74th Hunger Games shook the whole of Panem; there was supposed to be one victor and not four. Of course, the Capitol got suspicious. President Snow even killed off head Gamemaker Seneca Crane for not causing a diversion when the District 12 tributes were about to commit suicide because they refused to kill each other, they apparently had an un-dying love for each other.
But many believed that the real love story was between Lucy and Marvel. Marvel being the one who had confessed his love to his District partner when the two were dying. Panem was left in a state of shock when the two died but not for too long, for this was The Hunger Games and they couldn't get upset over two tributes whom had died tragically.
The Capitol only really blamed District 12 for the extra winnings in The Hunger Games. It was believed that the District 1 tributes were deceased as a result of many tracker jacker stings. It was quite a shock to Panem when the two tributes that were believed dead ran onstage during Caesar's interview with the apparent District 12 Victors. Yet, it was the Capitol's own fault that the District 1 tributes were still alive.
District 12 was in trouble.
District 1 was carefree.
And that was why District 1 had been in constant celebration when Lucy and Marvel had arrived back home. That was why the town square of District 1 had been converted into a dance floor and couples were dancing to celebrate their two Victors of the 74th Hunger Games. That was why Lucy was currently being beautified by her mother in the Mayor's house when she would re-unite with Marvel.
"Oh, Lace, you're going to look stunning! You know that?" Lucy's mother squealed as she began applying mascara to her daughters eyelashes and Lucy gripped the edges of the stool she had been forced to sit on in the bathroom.
"Thanks..." Lucy whispered, she felt like she was once again being prettied up for slaughter...well, this time it was torture. The torture part wasn't seeing Marvel, that was absolutely fine. But having to dance in front of a crowd would be the torture.
Because Lucy couldn't dance.
"Cheer up!" Lucy's mother ordered as she now began applying goodness knows what else to her face. "You're going to see Marvel, and that's what you want. Isn't it?"
"Of course it is, I just can't dance, mother. You know that."
"You can dance! I know you can! If not, Marvel will help you." Lucy's mother then stopped applying make-up and began trimming her nails, which she kept neat anyway. "He's such a lovely boy, isn't he? I told you all along that he would be the man for you but you don't listen to me do you? Mother knows best..."
Lucy didn't reply as Lucy's mother made her get up, then dragged her to her room and plaited her hair into two. She then slipped off the robe she had been wearing and her mother helped her into a dress that, for once, suited her taste.
"You know, I wish you'd dress like this more often. You look so beautiful like this," Lucy's mother sighed as she made a motion for her daughter to twirl and Lucy did in the most boring way possible.
"If I did it all the time, it wouldn't shock people as much, would it?"
"Perhaps not, but you still look good." Lucy's shoulders slumped at her mothers comment and her mother hit her on the back to make her stand up straight. "Back straight, head high!"
