You woke with a start, feeling the sharp pang of all your muscles seizing at once. It took only a few seconds for your mind to register that you were awake, that you were safe, and that there was no need for alarm. You let out a sigh as the fog cleared from your mind and you realized it had just been a nightmare.

You stared at the ceiling of your living quarters, focusing on your breathing. The images from your nightmare were still fresh in your mind. You tried to push them away, but it seemed like the more you tried to erase them, the more they persisted.

It had been a bad one, and one you hadn't had in a long time. It was always the same, though. Decepticons storming the Autobot base, laying waste to everything and everyone in their path. You were powerless to do anything as you were forced to watch all of your friends perish as everything around you was destroyed.

It was just a dream tonight, but it was a very real fear you constantly tried to repress. You sat up in bed, running your hands down your face. A mild shiver traveled down your spine. You knew sleep wouldn't be returning to you anytime soon, not with your nightmare lingering around.

Getting out of bed, you walked out of your room. It had previously been an office space for whatever military outfit had used the building before it was abandoned. It had since been furnished with everything you could ever need once you decided to take up permanent residence with the Autobots.

You wandered through the dimly lit halls, taking in the silence. The days were often hectic and busy, if not with patrols and Decepticons, then with maintenance and research. It wasn't that you disliked it, but it was nice to have a quiet moment every now and then.

You eventually found your way to the main room, spying the bot you were most hoping to find. Optimus Prime was standing in front of one of the many computer consoles, a constant stream of information running across the screen. It seemed as if he never stopped working. Tonight, however, you were grateful he was still up to talk to.

You climbed up the stairs to one of the many walkways so you could be more level with Optimus' imposing height. If he had heard you enter, he gave no indication.

"What are you reading?" You asked, leaning against the railing.

"I have been reading up on your planet's history. I find it most interesting," Optimus said, his optics never leaving the screen. He continued with barely a beat. "Is something the matter, Y/N? You should be recharging."

"No, no, nothing's wrong. I just had a nightmare, is all," you answered softly.

Optimus let out a thoughtful hum. "Do you wish to discuss it?"

You shook your head. "No, I-I don't think so."

  A pause.

"Will you hold me?" You asked.

Optimus turned towards you and you could tell he was smiling, even with his face mask. He held out his hand to you.

"Of course, sweetspark," he said.

Carefully, you climbed into his palm and he lifted you up, placing you delicately on his shoulder. You leaned against his head, fingers lightly tracing the base of his antenna. He raised a servo, a single digit lightly ruffling your hair in an affectionate manner. You felt the startings of a smile tug at your lips.

"How do you always know how to calm me down?" You said in a soft voice.

"I am far from all-knowing when it comes to humans," Optimus answered.

"Well, you do pretty well with this human," you said, patting his shoulder.

His frame rumbled as he chuckled lightly. Optimus rarely relaxed, but there was the odd time he let his guard down, especially around you. You felt privileged every time you got to hear his delightfully warm laugh.

But then the horrible images from your nightmare cut through the moment like a knife. You remembered all of the awful destruction, seeing your friends – seeing Optimus – die in front of you while you were paralyzed, unable to help in any way.

"Hey, Optimus?" You suddenly spoke up, trying to hide the tremble in your voice. "Nothing's gonna happen to you, right? Or, um...any of you guys? Like you're all okay, right?"

The scrolling text on the console's screen paused. Optimus carefully removed you from his shoulder to instead cradle you in cupped servos. He held you up to face level so he could make direct eye contact with you.

"Is that what your dream was about?" He asked, voice laced with concern. "That something bad happened to the Autobots and I?"

You shied away from his gaze. "It just...felt so real," you admitted. "I know it was just a silly dream, but..."

You lapsed into silence as you buried your face in your hands. Your words sounded so trivial when you were talking to a bot who had lived so long and seen so much. Your little nightmare was probably nothing compared to the years of war Optimus Prime had experienced.

"Y/N, look at me," Optimus said, his tone low and gentle.

You removed your hands from your face, staring into those mesmerizing optics of his.

"Your fear is not irrational. I, too, worry for the safety of my team and the safety of this planet. If we were to lose to Megatron once and for all..." He went silent for only a moment before blinking away the mere thought of such a world. "Your dream is not, as you put it, silly."

"Well, thank you," you said. "It makes me feel a little better knowing I'm not alone in feeling this way. I just figured... I don't know, you guys deal with this stuff so much, I guess I thought you were all desensitized to it or something."

"This war has been long and arduous, but I do not believe any bot has become numb to its sting," Optimus said solemnly. "I promise you, Y/N, that as long as energy flows through my circuits, I will not allow any harm to come to my team.

"Or to you."

You couldn't help smiling a little. You beckoned him forward and he held you closer, close enough for you to press a light kiss to his faceplate. You could tell he was smiling, too.

You stayed up a while longer with Optimus, perched on his shoulder while he continued to scroll through academic Earth texts translated into Cybertronian. Neither of you said a word; each other's company was enough.

When you tried (and failed) to stifle your third yawn in a row, Optimus insisted that you return to your living quarters and get some rest. You didn't have it in you to argue, so you let him carry you out of the main room and down the hall to your room. Once he arrived, he knelt down and gently set you on your feet in front of your door. You smiled up at him sleepily.

  "Goodnight, Optimus," you said.

He inclined his helm politely in return. "Goodnight, Y/N."
