You were dying.
Okay, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but you certainly felt like you were dying. It was so hot, you could practically see the heat waves distorting your surroundings. You turned your pillow over again, hoping the opposite side would be a little cool. It wasn't, but maybe if you imagined it was, you would get some relief.
You had gotten a ground bridge from the Autobot base to your house for the day. You had needed to pack some things to move to the base since you were there more often than you were at home. It had taken longer than you expected, though, so you decided to sleep in your own room for the night.
Now, however, you were severely regretting that decision. Your house had no air conditioning and it just happened to be the hottest night in the history of forever. The blankets were tangled in a heap on the floor, having been flung from your body almost the second you were in bed. Your window was open, but the air was so dry outside, you wondered if you'd be better off closing it.
It was gonna be hard getting to sleep tonight.
You turned over for the umpteenth time, hoping to discover some hidden cool spot on your bed. You shut your eyes and tried your hardest not to think about how you felt like you were boiling from the inside out. Somewhere down the road, you heard the deep rumble of a truck engine and the sound comforted you a little. Reminded you of Optimus.
Was it just you or was that truck getting closer?
Curious who would be out at this time of night, and in this heat, you sat up, gazing out your bedroom window. You watched as a pair of headlights traveled down the road. They turned into your driveway, which happened to be located directly next to your room, and you smiled as you saw that familiar cab and colour scheme.
"Optimus?" You said in disbelief. You let out a little laugh. "What are you doing here?"
You heard his brakes squeal as he came to a stop, the sound of his engine idling down to a purr.
"I wondered how you were doing," the bot replied through his radio. His window was rolled down so you could properly hear him. "The temperature tonight is...quite extreme."
"Tell me about it," you huffed. "I haven't been able to sleep at all. I feel like I'm melting."
"Could I interest you in a drive, then? I am equipped with air conditioning. And since this is your home and I do not know my way around, perhaps you could show me your favourite locations and we could--"
Optimus stopped talking as he saw you already clambering out of your bedroom window. You hadn't even bothered changing out of your pajamas.
"You had me at air conditioning," you said.
A burst of smoke escaped his smokestacks as Optimus let out a short laugh. His cab door swung open for you automatically and you hoisted yourself up into the semi's passenger seat. The door shut and immediately, you felt a welcome rush of cool air from the interior vents. You let out a happy sigh.
"Optimus, I think you just saved my life," you said.
"Was your situation really so grave?" He asked, a note of concern lacing his voice.
You smiled and shook your head, patting the dashboard affectionally. "Just another human oddity. Don't worry about it."
"Very well," Optimus said, content to leave it at that. It was your explanation for a lot of the weird things you did. "Now, where would you like to go?"
You thought for a moment. Your hometown didn't have much in the way of excitement, and it was so late that everything would be closed anyway. You thought and thought before suddenly, the perfect idea hit you.
"I know just the place," you said.

"I used to come here a lot as a kid."
You had directed Optimus up a dirt road to a little cliff the town had called Shadow Ridge. It earned its nickname because people always thought they saw shadowy beings roaming the cliff's edge, day or night. You had never taken stock in the rumours and had found the ridge to be a wonderful stargazing spot.
"It seems like a long way to go just to admire the stars," Optimus said. You were still comfortably nestled in his passenger seat.
"It was always worth it," you said. "I always found it so peaceful here. Like all my problems were a million miles away and they could never catch up to me."
Optimus gave a thoughtful hum. "You speak fondly of those times."
"Yeah. I do," you sighed wistfully, thinking back to when everything was so simple. How you didn't have to worry about giant alien robots killing each other and taking half the world with it. How you didn't have to be classified as a government secret just because you and the Autobot leader had something special.
The more you thought about it, though, the more you realized you wouldn't trade it for anything.
"I'm glad I got to come here with you, Optimus," you said, snuggling even further into the passenger seat. It almost felt like the Prime was hugging you back. "Makes it that much more special, you know?"
"Another fond memory to add to the collection," Optimus said and you could practically hear the smile in his voice. "I very much agree, Y/N."
You smiled. The two of you fell into a comfortable silence after that. Once again, Shadow Ridge made you feel truly at peace. You felt like there was no one else in the world besides you, Optimus, and the stars. You wished the feeling could last forever.
And as the night went on, you felt your eyes getting heavy and before you knew it, you were slipping into a comfortable sleep. You didn't even notice as the passenger seat slowly reclined back, so you could sleep without getting a crick in your neck. The vents adjusted themselves, keeping the cab temperature perfect for you. You didn't hear as the radio crackled to life with the calming voice of Optimus.
"Sleep well, my love," he whispered. "Sleep well."
