Beyond the wall there is nothing. A wasteland that we needed to protect ourselves from. That's what we were told. The law was that if we went beyond the wall we'd get the death penalty.
That was enough to stop most people. Others thought they were hiding something. Those people always managed to find a way to look beyond the wall. Everytime someone did, they were killed.
My father was one of those people. I was ten at the time, Minho was twelve. We were always best friends and Minho always knew how to comfort me when I was sad. When my family found out what my father had done, I immediately began to cry. I avoided everyone for the next week until Minho snuck into my house and convinced me to go back to school. Now that I think back on it, I feel stupid for letting my emotions get the best of me like that.
It wasn't until I started high school two years later that the curiosity began to eat me alive. What did my father see out there? What are they trying to hide?
I tried telling my mother, but she got angry and told me that I'd end up like my father if I wasn't careful.
My older brother always took my mother's side, so there was no point in confiding in him.
Minho was the one person I could trust. Maybe that's the reason why I ended up falling head-over-heels in love with him...
