MACI
"Wake up,"
"Wake up!"
"Dammit, hand me the water."
"Wake up,"
I feel a splash of coldness on my face. I instantly jolt up, my eyes opening faster than my breath hitches.
I see Niall in front of me.
"About time." He states, putting the empty cup down. I look over and see the familiar green eyes staring at me from across the room.
I notice immediately that I am in the same room I woke up in for the very first time. The same dirty gray wallpaper peeling off the sides, the cobwebs in the corners blowing around.
"Get up. Z wants to see you."
He grabs my hand. I am forcefully pulled up so hard that I feel as if my arm was popped out of place.
I am led to the room that, not at all surprisingly, opened to a desk and a man.
Mr. Z looked at me. His eyes were gray, almost like concrete.
"Sit."
I go over to the chair I had once sat in before. Mr. Z does not move his eyes off of me as he examines my face before eyeing me up and down.
It is just now I realize I had been dressed. I wore a large tatted tshirt and sweats.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" he asks coldly. I gulp.
"You've been told the rules. You were warned. Do you know how much you cost me tonight? Almost nine grand." I look at my lap. "I knew I shouldn't of let you be auctioned off so soon."
I hear shuffling and I look up. He now stands up from his chair, his hands on the desk. "You cost me one more damn penny and I promise you'll regret it. You're lucky I'm letting you slide this time."
He walks over to me. I tense up. "This won't happen again, got it?"
I nod. "Yes."
Once again, it happened faster than I could process. The heat shot through my cheek and for a second, everything goes black.
I bring my hand up to my face, holding it.
"What the fuck did you just say to me?"
"Y-yes sir."
He smiles. He brings his fingertips to my chin and lifts my face up to his. "There you go. Much better."
He lets go and walks back to his desk. I watch as he sorts through papers. He does this for around ten seconds before looking up and the men behind me.
"Put her in room 10."
It doesn't take long to get there. With Niall and the brunette holding both my arms, we make our way to the last door on the right in the hallway.
Niall puts his hand up to a blue screen. I watch as he punches in a code, (way too fast for me to remember) and scans his fingerprint.
I'm soon in a room with one other girl. I see her on a dirty mattress in the corner, huddled up and asleep.
Niall pushes me in. It's not long before I turn, trying to go through the door with him, when it shuts.
"Hello?"
I turn around and face the girl. She has black hair, almost similar to the makeup artist's. Except hers is long. Long and tangled.
She uncurls from her ball. She slowly stands up and walks over to me.
"Who are you?"
I scrunch my eyebrows, "Who are you?"
She sniffles. "Jane. Jane Henderson."
I am immediately taken aback by the name.
"Jane Henderson? As in the Jane Henderson?"
She nervously smiles, although showing no sign of anything but pity. "Yeah."
My eyes widen. "You've been missing for four years!"
"I know. Four years, two months, and thirteen days, to be exact." She nods towards her corner. I see nothing but talley marks on the wall.
I want to puke.
"Holy fucking shit-" I mumble, "holy fucking shit- oh fuck. oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh-"
I pace around the room. This girl has been here four years. Am I going to be here for four years?
"Calm down." she speaks calmly.
I lean against the wall, trying to take this in. I flash back to the news.
"Hi, I'm Anna Pegg, and we are coming to you live from Springdale. I am here with the mother of Jane Henderson, the sixteen year old girl who was reported missing two weeks ago."
The camera zooms in on the woman, standing in a blue blouse and glasses.
"Jane, baby, I know you're out there somewhere. I don't know why you would leave us like this, but please baby, come home. Your father and I miss you dearly. Wherever you are, please, just call us. Let us know you are okay. For our sake, and our sanity. We need to know where our little girl went."
The girl who went missing. The girl who supposedly ran away. The girl who was assumed dead after four years, stands before me, tattered and weak.
"You didn't run off," I said.
She almost laughed. "Of course not. I loved my family, so much."
I try to process our conversation.
I examine her more throughly. Her eyes were still the same shade of blue as they were in the picture on the tv, only now filled with sadness. Her hair was much longer than the braids she once had them in, and her face was a lot more drained.
"You never told me your name."
I swallow rather hard, trying to focus on other things. "Maci Reynolds."
She nods. "Well, Maci, you happen to be the first roommate I've had in years."
"What happened to your other one?"
She looked down. "She sold."
I walk back over to the door. I try to pull the handle, but to no avail.
"You might as well not try and get out. This place has top notch security. Locks on all the doors, no windows, and guards at every wing."
I shake my head. "There's got to be some way out."
"There's not. I've been trying for four years now."
I try to hold back the tears that want to form once again.
"So that's it? I'm stuck here and that's the end of my story? There's no hope?"
She almost laughs. "Oh Maci, you've got a lot to learn."
