~After School~
Kayla Smith
I waited for Shawn at the exit of the school with Maxie. Jaxon has just left to get on his bus. Since I had forgotten earlier, she spent this time explaining to me why CJ now has my number. "Hear me out, bitch. I just thought it'd be funny—"
"Hoe..."
"I mean, you need a boyfriend, sis. And you need to stop using Shawn as arm candy. He's cute and all, but he's literally blocking any and every nigga that try to get with you." She giggled.
"Shawn is not the problem. I just don't want or need a boyfriend." I rubbed my temples, "I'm not interested in a relationship Maxie." She looked at me in disbelief. "So what? You just gon—"
"Shutup, Shawn is coming." I leaned into her. Shawn dapped up a few of his friends and approached us with a big grin on his face. "Damn, two ugly ass little girls waiting for me." He stopped a few feet in front of us. "Nigga, you the ugly one. Been walking around all day with that boed ass jacket on." Maxie jumped in.
"Excuse the fuck outta me."
"No for real, it's time for a new one."
"I don't give a damn what y'all talking bout. It's called distressed." He popped the collar on the jean jacket. "Yeah, it's under stress alright. C'mon y'all let's go catch this bus." We started walking towards the city bus stop.
"Right, before we all be walking."
Maxie rides the bus to the same stop as me everyday. She lives real close to me so sometimes she'll even stay over. But today she said she was gonna start on some work she shoulda been turned in. Typical Maxine. Like we had planned, Shawn was coming home with me to help me write hopefully. Shawn and Maxie talked up a storm on the way home, but again, I was stuck looking out the window, waiting for something to come to me. I just didn't get it, it wasn't usually this hard. I hadn't written anything good enough to sing for months. It was starting to piss me off.
When I tell my mom about it, she usually just says "Just wait, something will come when you least expect it."
Maybe she's right, I need to just wait for something. But I get tired of waiting. I'm not very patient when it comes to my writing, what can I say?
"Look at our kayla baby." I heard Maxie's voice. I looked across to see her and Shawn staring at me with grins on their faces. "This all she ever do, stare out the damn window. She really don't even be paying any attention to us." Shawn sat back in his seat. I smiled a little, "Shutup, I'm just tryna get something to come to me. I don't what's wrong I'm wit me."
"Ouuu, I want you to write something sexy. Something we can get down to, you know what I'm talking 'bout, Shawn." He looked at her sideways.
"No the fuck I don't. You stay doin' that, Maxie." We both laughed. Shawn swore up and down that he ain't have no girls that wanted him. But we all know full well, he may as well just say he could have any girl he really wanted. Not to mention, Shawn couldn't keep his man parts to himself when he was in a relationship. If he had a girl friend they was always doin it. "Oh c'mon, Shawn."
"C'mon nothing." He laughed. "If anything, that's you and Jaxon. Y'all be ready to get it poppin' anywhere, bruh."
"Ok, but we ain't even talking about them we talking about you." I stepped in. Things like this I would miss once senior year ends. Talks with my friends, bus rides home. We were happy with each other and it's tough to imagine not seeing them everyday.
