"The word we know is coming to an end. We need heroes now more than ever!" the T.V reporter exclaimed.
I, Catherine Jennings, was sitting on the couch trying to change the channel, when my brother walked in.
"Davis?! What are you doing back from school so soon?" I asked.
"Mom's dead".

5 hours earlier

991, what's your emergency?
"Yes, I need help! I've been hit by a truck! I'm having trouble breathing," Mom said between coughs.
Okay ma'am, where are you at the moment?
"I'm at 36th Capre Avenue."

Tears filled my eye as Davis told me the story. Mom was on her way from the grocery store when a drunk driver in a truck swerved and hit her car.
"Where was dad?" I questioned, sobbing
"Where else? The pub." Davis was crushed. Mom was his absolute best friend. Although Rebecca Jones was my stepmother, I considered her as my real one. I had no other.
Then suddenly, all the sadness flushed out of me, and anger took it's place.
"If dad had just gone to Hello&Help to get the eggs Mom wanted instead of get drunk, Mom would still be here," I said raging.
Just then, the front door opened. It was my sister, Samantha, with our pet dog, Cordeen. From the joy in her eyes, I knew she hadn't hear the news about Mom. I didn't want to be the one to break it to her.
"Hey, Samantha," Davis started,"come sit down.
She walked over to the couch.
"What happened?" She said after seeing the tear stains on our faces.
"Well, Mom got into an accident," I muttered.
All the joy and happiness were instantly sucked out of her face. Her rosy cheeks turned pale. The mere mention of someone getting hurt could shatter a 9-year old like her.
"Is she alright?"her voice cracking with emotion.
"That's the thing,"Davis replied,"she's dead."
Samantha stopped moving. She stop breathing for moments. All in all, she stopped. Her body stopped.
"What do you mean "she's dead"?"her voice get defensive.
"She's gone, Samantha. Never coming back." I clarified
Davis shot me a annoyed looked, softened his face, and looked at Samantha.
"She passed in the hospital".
"No. No! No! No!"was all she could say.
All three of us cuddled and cried together for what seemed like days.
*KNOCK KNOCK*
"I'll get it" Davis told us.
Once Davis opened the door, Dad walked in. Drunk. With a bottle of vodka in his hand.
And all the anger I stored inside me popped like a bubble.
