Another June morning dawned as the stifling heat already hung over everything. But a slight breeze silently danced upon the tree limb, outside of her window, allowing a gentle breeze to cool her as she slowly awakened. As sleep slowly left her, her eyes fluttered open and she sighed, and prayed a silent prayer, "dear Lord, get me out of here..." Another sigh...
Amanda could hear her father stirring in the next room, no doubt looking for his morning coffee.. and as she lay there, she heard him Bellow through the house....."Amanda.... Get your ass out of that bed, and get in here and cook my breakfast.. and where is my coffee?! you useless girl!"
It was all she could do to drag herself out of her bed, and pull her clothes on.
She hadn't had much sleep because it was hard to sleep when it was so hot. She finally fell asleep around 3:30 a.m. which was not enough time to get a full night's sleep. But through her exhaustion she answered her father, "I'm coming Daddy!"
30 minutes later, she was standing over a hot stove... The coffee was ready, so were the biscuits. The bacon and eggs were very close to being done.
Her father sat at the table, reading his morning paper, and glancing up at her every few minutes.
"Well, is it done yet?"
"Yes, it's done, hang on while I put the food on the plate ok..."Her father only sighed and shook his head, and returned his gaze towards his paper.
She quickly piled the food on his plate, and sat it down before him.
"It's about time!" He growled. "Where is my coffee?"
"Coming right up Daddy..."She couldn't understand how he could drink hot coffee and in this heat, but he could.
In between bites of bacon and eggs, and reaching for his coffee, he glanced up at Amanda.
"After breakfast this house needs a good cleaning.."
"Can I do that after school Daddy? Today's the last day, and my teacher is throwing a party. I wanted to be there?"
"Alright, after school then.. you best get ready and go to school."She quickly scarfed down a bit of food and headed towards her bedroom. Finding the blue sundress in her closet, she turned to her dresser and got out a clean pair of panties and bra, then headed towards the bathroom.
30 minutes later she was walking to school.. It was a bit of a long walk, but she was thankful for it.
She was able to somewhat clear her head, and prepare herself for the long day ahead.
Along the worn path, was a line of Angel oak trees. She was thankful for the light breeze that blew through them as she walked underneath the tree-lined path.
Finally she arrived at her school, greeted by a smiling woman standing at the door..
The only time she ever felt loved when she was at school, because the teacher was very kind to her.
"Well good morning Amanda, how are you this fine morning?"
Miss Peterson seemed more bubbly than normal.
Amanda sighed...
"I hate my life!" She sank down onto the steps of the tiny school, and cried.
"Awe, Honey, what's wrong?"
"It's my father... he hates me.. I don't know what I did to make him hate me so.. I wish I'd never been born..""Awe, I'm so sorry you're going through this... I've met your father a few times.. I agree, he's a jerk.. but hey... I've got good news, and it may cheer you up.."
"What is it?" Amanda wiped her tears away and looked up at her teacher.
"Do you remember that poetry contest you entered?"
"Yes.."
"Well, you won first prize!" Amanda had to smile At Miss Peterson's exuberance, as she waved her arms in the air.."Woohoo.... Isn't that great?"
"What....."
"Yes, you won.."
"And what does that mean?"
"It means you're going to London.. first class, and you're staying in a very nice hotel... All expenses have been paid!"
"You're kidding!"
"No, I'm not.. come inside, and I'll show you.."In no time, Amanda was standing at Miss Peterson's desk, looking at the paperwork, and the plane ticket.
"I can't believe this! I've always wanted to go to London!"
"Well, now your dream is coming true... And, you never know.. You just might run into you know who!"Amanda's head popped up at her teacher's words..
"You mean..."
"Yep... Paul McCartney! I know you love him!"
"Oh... I do... He's so cute.. and... Oh my goodness...wow!"At this time all the other students started piling in.. so Amanda had to take her seat.
So, she gathered up all the paperwork, and put it in her book bag, and walked over to her desk and sit down.
Miss Peterson threw a very nice party, to celebrate graduation.
A couple days later they went through the graduation ceremony in which she was given her diploma. Her father was not there.
When he heard about her forthcoming trip to London England, he attempted to order her not to go. But she stood her ground. She was grown by now, 19 years old, old enough to do what she wanted to do.
She had made up her mind. She looked at her reflection in her mirror, and announced to herself, "I will not stay here and be hated and treated like a slave. It's time to move on and make my own way in life."
She packed her suitcase, and calmly walked out of her room and down the stairs.
Her father stood in the kitchen staring at her as she walked past him. She stopped and turned around to face him.
"I just want to know one thing.. why have you hated me all these years? I did nothing to warrant the treatment that I have received by your hand since I was a little girl. You beat me mercilessly and treated me like a slave. I don't deserve that, and I never did. Why did you do it? Why do you hate me so?"
Her father took a deep breath, and answered her.
"You are not my daughter.. your mother cheated on me with some stupid British person.. she got pregnant with you. She was going to go off with him, but he was killed in a car accident. I took pity on your mother and forgave her.. well I tried to forgive her. When she died I promised her I would take care of you. I did my best."
"If that was your best I'd hate to see your worst!"
She then turned and walked out the door.
Miss Peterson was in the front yard standing by her car.
"Ok.. are you ready?" She asked as she reached for Amanda's suitcase.
"Yes, I am so ready.. I've never been so ready!"
"Well alright... let's go then.."The two got into the car then miss Peterson backed out of the driveway.
That was the last time Amanda ever saw that two-story White House, and the man who raised her, whom she had just found out was not her father.
Her new life awaited her in London England.
