Chapter 4// Marked

He lunged down. Pain. Blood.

Starlett's body lay still, her eyes closed as blood drenched her neck. The idiot brother, Luke or whatever wailed violently behind us.
"Cease that racket or I'll cut off your tounge to silence you", I snapped. Damn I hate children. Starlett thought I was lying when I spoke of her brother's thoughts. I do not lie. In the mind of Luke I saw many more, and far worse, imaginings of his older sister. Humans today are far more perverse than I give them credit.
"Do yourself a favor and call your human guard. If I were you , I would make up a story of a killer breaking in and taking your sister. I highly doubt that telling them that she made a deal with the Devil would gain you anymore than imprisonment in an insane asylum", I told the boy, who in turn nodded his head meekly.
I sighed before picking up the unconscious Starlett, I would rather not have given the boy any advice, but I am bound to my word. Luke Bellrose, even with my strong distaste for him, had to be protected.
In silence I left house. Whatever sapling human said young girls were as light as aer in your arms was a fool. A human has mass, therefore it weighs. I carried her through the dark wood and past the houses. Making my way to the village Square.
This total night was an utter failure. The weapon had not showed itself. I sensed its presence, and so Zayn was right about the location. But we could not see it. All I had to show from this venture to Earth was a petty human girl.
I walked through the dark wood and passed the patch of houses, before coming to the village square. Of course I had shrouded myself from the eyes of humans, as well as Starlett.
Louis casually leaned against metal railings next to Zayn. Both seemed pis.sed talking amongst themselves. Their faces twisted upon seeing me.
"What, in the Morrigan's name, is that ?" Louis seethed, obviously his question was directed at Starlett.
" She, is non of your business", I growled in response, before sighing. Zayn and Louis were my friends , I should not have been acting like this to them. "She sold her soul in exchange for her brother's, I am simply collecting".
Zayn's's eyes widened, "then why is she here now, what about the time limit. Better yet why is her soul still in its packaging".
Damn Zayn and his questions, but still, I dragged them to Earth with me, and so I owed them this at least. " It was an instant exchange, neither of them planned to make contact. Also why kill her and take the soul now?" I smirked, "It would be a waste".
What I said was partially true, it was unclear even to me why I kept her alive. But I did. Normally no Demon would question my decisions. Zayn and Louis were different. I treated them as equals, as they did me. Both would happily question anything I do .
"Since when do you do reapings?" Louis chided, "you never handle deals personally, that's what the fleshling units are for".
Once again a valid question, and so I answered. "I think you would agree that this deal required my special attention, considering the location".
With their curiosities satisfied Zayn began to build a portal, chanting quickly as he focused his energy.
I looked down at Starlett who still slept soundly. Barely moving despite the small rise and fall of her chest as she breathed.
" There is still one thing I don't understand Harry", Louis said, standing next to me. "What will you do with her once we arrive home".
I turned to face my friend, "Louis I have absolutely no idea".
