chapter 2// Heat

Luke smiled wickedly, signalling James who in turn flipped his rucksack from his back and pulled out a large solid block wrapped in some form of a black cloth. In which he quickly unwrapped, revealing a thin piece of darkly illustrated wood.
"Is that a Ouija board?"
Star
Really, a Ouija board on Halloween? How cliché of him. I managed a dry laugh and crossed my arms respectively. " Wow and when I thought you couldn't get anymore childish".
James scoffed, "Do you know how much pocket money it took to get this?".
I raised an eyebrow , " So yeah childish and gullible!" I cackled while Luke's eyes darkened in annoyance "If you're that desperate to have some fun with the dead why not use the board dad got us when we were kids!" I wheezed.
" Star that was just a board game, this, is the real deal", Luke growled. I couldn't have taken him seriously, even if they had tried, they must have been joking.
"Yeah right", I giggled.
"Starlett, why don't you go to the kitchen and cook something nice, let the men handle this", John tried to smirk. Pig.
I shot him a menacing glare, "one more sexist remark from you little boy and I swear I'll castrate you", I warned.
John backed off while gulping loudly, it served him right.
"Well I'm going to let you children get on with things", I giggled in the 'mumsiest' voice I could muster.
" Fuc.k you Star", Luke snapped.
" Language! ".
With that I left the living room, planning on spending the rest of the evening indulging in Rob Zombie films.
An absolute perfect way to spend Halloween.

" We liked to get fuc.ked up and do fuc.ked shi.t".
I rhymed off most of the lines perfectly. I adored this movie. Thankfully and much unlike my brother, I inherited my father's love of horror movies, and house of a thousand corpses being one of the greats.
My fingers were coated in a thin layer of sugar from the popcorn I had been wolfing down. I had called off Sam, Elise and I's night in do to the freak weather. At least an hour back, a massive thunderstorm had rolled in, naturally accompanied by large amounts of lightning, rain and wind. Maybe it was my brother and his Ouija board's doing ...
Not!
I laughed quietly to myself, enjoying the quiet time I had alone. I brushed the mass of tangles I sadly had to call my hair out of my eyes, and wrapped the duvet closer around my body. Salem slept soundly beside me, curled up in a little ball, purring contently. My little Salem had black and white fur, with piercing green eyes and a little pink nose. My mother and I happened to be the only two in the family who even liked cats.
The wind hummed against the window, the rain battering down fiercely but no matter how hard it fell it could not break the strong barrier of glass. The lights were dimmed low, a comforting glow that flickered in every corner of my room. An old blanket draped over my shoulders with even older pajamas clothing my body.
It was nights like this in which I felt safe. Protected in my home from the harms of the world. A blanket of security (no pun intended) keeping me safe from any harshness. My room being my sanctuary.
