And oh the Dead.
My ears popped. That's how I knew something was wrong. It's 12am, Saturday July 12th 2028. I get up and my ears pop even more. I go to college to become an Astroscientist, I think to myself, either this is a dream or something has entered the atmosphere. Either way I went to my window to check. For days now there has been a rumor that an asteroid will enter the Earth's atmosphere, but we all thought that it would be blown to pieces so nobody researched it. Out my window, hurling towards the ground was a huge asteroid. I dropped as fast as I could to the ground preparing myself for the impact. Within seconds a big explosion disrupts our small planet. I hear a big boom and my ears start to bleed. I am thrown backwards into my wall. Then I take a nice long nap.
When I wake up I can hardly open my eyes, they feel crusted shut. My arms reach up to my eyes and rub them. I open them and sit up. My back is sore and I have a nasty cut above my right eye. Which explains the crusty feeling. I stand up and look around the room. I live by myself in a tiny two room house, i'm not around much because of classes and I have very little stuff, but what I do have is scattered all around my bedroom. I'm careful to not step on anything on my way to the window. I look all around outside. There were dying fires, burned houses, and dead people. Oh the dead. I remembered what happened, the asteroid, the boom...everything. I am not dead, which means the asteroid was farther away. Only the people outside were affected.
I tried my comm, it was dead. I rushed to the front door and slipped on my shoes. Amil. I thought. My best friend. I unlocked the door and ran to her house next door. But before I could reach the door handle I saw her, laying on the grass. I choked down a sob.I picked her head up.
"Amil?" I whispered. "Please wake up." I begged. That's when I heard it. A crying from inside the house.
"Shit, her baby." I cursed. I jumped up, accidentally dropping her head on the ground. But at the moment I didn't care. A mini Amil was off crying.
I burst through every room in the house until I got to the end of the hall. I was sure it was this room. Thank god she is actually alive. I went into the room and there she was. A one year old baby, standing in her crib, crying for her dead mother. I picked her up and shushed her.
"I'm sorry, Cassiopeiae." She looked just like her mother. Olive skin, green eyes, thick black hair that was in a ponytail. Amil had named her Cassiopeiae after our favourite constellation, she said one day, Cass would be a beautiful girl. I realized what I now had to do. I had a child to take care of. I ran around the house with Cass in my hands, scrambling to gather stuff into a backpack. Clothes, cloth diapers, baby food and more. I went into almost every room until I reached her bedroom. A picture of Amil, Cass, and I. I picked it up and shoved it into the backpack. With my comm not working, I won't be able to show her any pictures of her mom. I put Cass down and stopped for a moment to think of anything else I would be missing. I took a deep breath in and let it out. I then remembered that Cassiopeiae was only a baby, she must have had some damage to her. I checked the soft spots and didn't see anything. All she had was a small cut on her left arm. Nothing to be worried about. I sighed a sigh of relief, swung the backpack over my shoulder and walked out the front door. I covered Cass's eyes as I walked around my bestfriend. Her dead mother. A small tear slipped down my left cheek as I left her in the grass.
I got into my house. Not knowing where I was going or what I was doing. I set her down on the couch and frantically ran around grabbing my stuff. I grabbed a change of clothing, my lunchbox which I filled with food and I linked it with my pack. Then I went back over to Cassiopeiae, picked her up and got ready to see what the world had to offer. Who was left. If I could get help. I don't even know what day it is.
I heard a low growl come from behind me. I spun around and saw a dog. It didn't look harmless, it's tail was wagging and it's tongue was out. I smiled.
