Chapter Ten:
Gavin rushed into the parking lot of the school, threw off his seatbelt, and opened the car door.
But once I spotted Elizabeth's car in the parking lot also, I quickly pulled Gavin back into the car and he shut the driver's door.
"What the hell, Holland?" he says. "We have to be in Mr. McCann's class in less than thirty seconds!"
"Hide me," I say, "in the trunk."
"What the fu-?"
"Just do it, Gavin!" I shout. "My mother's in the fucking parking lot!"
"You're just going to get into more trouble," he says, but shrugs.
Suddenly, I see Elizabeth standing at the building's front steps.
I quickly jump onto the floors of the backseat of the car.
"Gavin!" I whisper-yell. "Get back here!"
"I'm going to let Elizabeth see me," he says.
"Gavin, are you crazy?" I say. "You are not, and I repeat, NOT ratting me out on this one!"
"Holland," he says, "it's time you-" but before he could say anything else, there was Elizabeth's hand, knocking on Gavin's car window.
I took my part and sat up, letting her see me. Her face went emotionless. "Out of the car," she motioned to both of us.
Gavin and I both stepped out of the car.
"I got a call from Mr. McCann, Holland," she says. "It wasn't good news, and I thought I would trust you and not believe him, but now I guess I have to apologize.
"Gavin, go on home," she says to him. Without saying a word, Gavin looks at me one last time, slowly turns around and walks back to his car to drive out of the school parking lot.
"Do you not like me?" she randomly asked.
"I could ask you the same question," I say.
"Evelyn, I gave my all for thirteen years to get you back into this family," she says. "It isn't enough for you, is it?"
"Elizabeth-"
"I bring you back into our household, and you can't even cooperate with a little thing like changing your name back to Evelyn," she says. "LoriJean gave you everything you asked for, and I'm sorry, but that's not how life works."
"Elizabeth, I-"
"Hunter told me about your runaway bag under your bed," she says. "He-"
"Why in satan's name would he do that?" I say, projecting my voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "Does this family know what privacy is?"
"Evelyn-"
"Call me Holland!" I retort.
"I will not call you Holland, young lady, do you understand me? I am your mother and you will not give me orders," she says, loud enough for the whole school to hear.
I just roll my eyes and shake my head.
"You are lucky your father is on your side," she points her finger in my face, "because if he didn't, you'd have a hard time in this family."
Family...? That word made me want to scream.
"You aren't my family!" I finally say. "LoriJean is my mother, not you! I don't care if she did something so wrong as kidnap me, she acted like more of an actual mother more than you ever could to four kids."
