THE JOURNEY THROUGH ARCHENLAND – DAY ONE.

When night turned to day, the fire had burned out and the stars were no longer shining. In their place was charred wood and the morning sun. Sylvie found quickly that she was the first of their travelling party to wake. She had slept well through the night, even despite the day's events. The battle on the merchant ship had exhausted her and she was sure that was why she hadn't woken up even once in the night.

She looked over at where Cas had last been, checking to make sure he was still breathing. He was, but that wasn't what surprised her. Cas and Violet were still fast asleep, so close to each other that Sylvie had to rub her eyes to make sure that was what she was truly seeing or a trick of her imagination. It wasn't; it was quite real. Cas was lying on his side, facing Violet with one hand underneath his head. His other hand was pressed on the grass, only inches away from Violet's.

For a moment as she looked at them, Sylvie allowed herself to wonder what would happen if Cas and Violet realized what they must already know somewhere in their minds, hidden away with the rest of their secrets. If Violet would confess the real reason why the three of them were in Archenland together, if Cas would forgive her for lying to him. But as soon as the fleeting thought crossed her mind, she regretted ever letting herself wonder.

Sylvie knew she couldn't stop them from falling for each other, nor could she stop them from acting on their feelings if they so choose. Love, in her opinion, was something everyone should experience—and if they were lucky, like she had been, the first person they fall entirely in love with would be the person they spend the rest of their lives with.

She just didn't want to see Cas or Violet get their heart broken.

"All right, you two," said Sylvie loudly when she stopped thinking on it, clapping her hands together. Violet jolted awake, blinking as her eyes adjusted to the morning light. Sylvie had to hold back a laugh; she always enjoyed startling Violet like that. It seemed to be one of the few things that did. "Cas! Eyes open, the sun's risen!"

Violet hit Cas' arm lightly. He stirred, but didn't wake. She rolled her eyes, grabbing his shoulder and shaking him awake. Cas let out an unintelligible exclamation as his eyes snapped open, and this time, Sylvie didn't bother holding back her laughter.

"Come on," said Sylvie again, an amused grin and trailing laughter accompanying her words. She set her hands on her hips, glancing briefly at the world around them. "Hundreds of miles to the border. We should get going. North is this way, isn't it?"

DAY TWO.

Violet was unable to pinpoint the exact distance they had traveled, but despite that, she could say she was absolutely exhausted. Though, if asked, she wouldn't admit it to Cas or Sylvie; she wanted her pride to stay intact. While sleeping helped initially, her legs were incredibly sore and she even felt as though they would give out any moment. She assumed her traveling companions felt the same.
