"My dear girl, I'm a doctor. When I peek, it is in the line of duty." - McCoy TOS
Capella heard the electronic whir and soft tone as she stood perfectly still, beaming up to the stars. Her heart pounded in her chest as if it could leap into her throat and steal her voice. Almost instantaneously, she was now on the ship.
The new recruit looked around, taking in her surroundings. She was surprised at how painless and quick it was to beam up. Looking behind her, she awkwardly realized that more graduates had beamed up, including her best friend Rigel. Rigel was an attractive young man, there was no denying that, but Capella had always fancied men a bit older than her.
"Capella! I'm so glad you're here! Who's training you?" He smiled and his eyes lit up.
"It's really good to see you too, Rigel," she chimed, "McCoy is training me. What about you?"
"McCoy? Damn, you're lucky. I'm stuck with some nurse. Probably because I ranked in the bottom hundred, but you're like the top of the class!" A realization seemed to hit him.
"I'm only 6th," she chuckled. The spark in Rigel's eyes dimmed.
"Well, I guess we will both go our separate ways. Good luck out there, though," Rigel trailed off, looking a bit upset.
"You too, man. Maybe we could go for drinks when we both have a day off?"
Rigel paused, "I'll think about it," he replied. Then he walked away a bit clumsily.
A bit confused by her friend's unusual behavior, Capella made her way to the women's changing room to receive her new uniform. Scientists and doctors like her wear blue garments. She was handed a dress with a gold band on each sleeve.
Capella had stripped to her underwear, when she realized she had done something wrong. She was actually in the men's changing room! Luckily no one was inside, so she quickly started to dress, flushed with embarrassment. But then, someone walked in...
An older man with brown hair, tan skin, and striking blue eyes had come through the door. He was dressed in blue Starfleet scrubs, showing his masculine, hair-covered arms. In Capella's eyes, he was more handsome than Rigel. She recognized him immediately, it was McCoy. Fortunately, she had her uniform completely on already. The disaster was avoided, but now, how would she get out?
Capella decided she would let him know what had happened and politely leave right away.
She stepped out. "I am so sorry, I didn't mean to go in here. I'm leaving now," she said very quickly, all at once like her words were falling out of her mouth. She walked quickly to the door but soon felt a hand on her arm.
"Hey, wait up! Don't worry about it, people do that all the time ... you're my trainee, aren't you? Capella Eos?" McCoy's slight Southern accent sounded like he came straight from Georgia. Which he did, and Capella knew because she had researched him the night before.
Blushing harder than ever, Capella replied, "Yes, sir, I am. I'm looking forward to being your apprentice." She knew she had to be extra polite. McCoy was good friends with Kirk. Such good friends that he even called the captain "Jim," so she knew she would be in trouble if she did something wrong around McCoy.
"Do you have your badge?", McCoy asked smiling. It might have been Capella's imagination, but she swore McCoy briefly looked at her chest in the tight dress and the shortness of her skirt.
"Here it is," Capella said, and she put the badge on.
"It was very nice to meet you early, Miss Eos. I'll contact you when it's time to begin your medical training," the doctor said smoothly.
Still embarrassed, Capella returned the sentiment, said goodbye, and got out of the changing room as quick as she could. Laying in her bed that night, Capella couldn't help but think about McCoy and his handsome smile.
