I woke up with my mother beside my bed. I could see she had been crying but I couldn’t hear her. I looked around to find myself in a hospital. There was a needle in my arm. There was a pull out table beside me and my laptop on it. Mom looked over at me and smiled. She grabbed my laptop beside my bed and started typing. She turned it around and showed me,

“Hey Emily. Glad to see you up. How are you feeling?”

“I can’t hear anything, there is a needle in my arm and, oh, did I mention, I CAN’T HEAR!”

I showed here it and she laughed a silent laugh.

“Well glad to see you still have a sense of humor. But you want to know so you know that at the meet you went too deep on your finish?” I nodded, “Well you see when you did that there was too much pressure on your ears and since you still had an infection it blasted your eardrums. You wont be able to hear again because of how it wasn’t treated properly before the paramedics got there. I’m so sorry.”

It took me a minute to take that in then I put,

“Where is Dad, Jessie, and Jake?”

“Home, you will be staying here for the night. Tomorrow they are going to see if you can come home the next day, but for now you need to sleep. See you tomorrow"

She kissed my forehead and left. I tried to sleep but couldn’t. Every time I thought I was tired I was jerked awake from the eerie silence that surrounded me. Finally I fell into a restless sleep.
