Tony started off working diligently like he usually does, but after asking Steve to pass him a blue wire, he didn't get any more work done. The two of them talked for hours about anything and everything. Tony told him about the important things he missed when he was asleep for 70 years, such as Starbucks and iPhones. And Steve told him about his brief romance with Peggy Carter and his best friend Bucky Barnes. Tony listened intently and seemed to hold onto every word Steve said, which Steve appreciated greatly. He had never talked to anyone about his personal loses before. They soon realized that it was 10:00 pm and they wondered together where the day had gone. Steve suddenly smacked himself on the head.
"The last bus from here to where I live left at 9:45! How am I gonna get home?"
"You- you take the bus?"
"Yeah."
"You're... Captain America... and you take the bus..."
Steve looked a little embarrassed. "I... don't have a drivers license."
"You what?!" Tony started laughing so hard he doubled over.
"Okay, yeah, it's hilarious that I don't know how to drive. Now how am I gonna get home?"
"Cap, seriously? You're talking to Iron Man right now. The Iron Man. I'll fly you home, it's no problem."
"Um, don't you have like five cars?"
"Yes, but none of them are working at the moment. You see, I needed a few wires and I was too lazy to go to the store to get them."
"Of course."
"So I'll just put on my suit and fly you home."
"Nah, I couldn't ask you to do that."
"Okay, don't."
And before Steve could register what was happening, Tony's suit was on and they were off.
Steve screamed the whole way to his house. Tony kept laughing at him and smiling whenever Steve's grip around him tightened. He unconsciously wished that he wasn't wearing his suit at that moment.
When they reached his house and landed on the ground, Steve was too in shock to let go, and Tony gently shook him off. Steve was panting and he said through deep breaths, "I am...never... flying... again."
Tony lifted his mask and patted him on the back. "Don't worry, Cap, you'll get used to it."
At those words, Steve puked all over Tony's feet.
"Oh shit, Steve, that's absolutely disgusting. I just had this suit cleaned, god."
Steve puked a little more and then said, "Language."
"Oh, come on. You're Captain America! You've done crazy stuff, you can't handle a little flying?"
"Tony, you kept spinning and going upside down!"
"Oh. Right, sorry."
Tony realized that Steve was too dizzy to walk straight, so he put his arm around him and helped him walk into his house. He had never been in Steve's house before. Well, it was really an apartment. It was small, but Steve didn't need a big place. He just couldn't understand how Steve's massive arms could fit through the doorways. Steve sat down on the couch.
"Thanks for the ride, Tony."
"No problem. Sorry I made you sick, though."
"Nah, I'm fine. Nothing you do can make me sick."
When Steve realized what he said he quickly looked down at his feet.
Tony smiled and said, "Ditto, Cap. Except when you puked on my feet, that kinda made me sick."
Steve laughed. It was the most genuine laugh Tony had ever heard from him, and he couldn't help but laugh too. Tony sat down on the couch next to him and they both laughed until they had tears in their eyes.
When they could finally breathe, Tony said, "Steve, I need to tell you something."
"Ooo, you called me Steve and not Cap. This must be serious."
Tony grinned a little, but then sighed. "I just want to tell you that... I feel really comfortable with you. And I've never really felt comfortable with any other human before. And I'm just really glad that I have you."
Steve just stared at him. He had no idea that Tony was capable of such kind words that weren't dripping with sarcasm. "Wow, Tony, that's... I mean... That's really nice of you to say. I feel comfortable with you, too. And I'm also glad that I have you."
They stared at each other and leaned their faces an inch closer together.
Steve looked down and then stood up and said, "You know, I just puked, and it's late and I should go wash up and go to bed. And you need some rest, too."
Tony looked a little puzzled, and he said, "Yes, of course." And without another word, he walked out the door and flew away.
Steve started at the door for at least five minutes after he had left. He treasured Tony's friendship more than anything, but now he was starting to wonder if it was really friendship, or something more.
