Craig was the person that you would see in a cafe sitting alone in a corner, without a friend in sight. He was the person that was usually on his phone pretending to be texting away as everyone else around him chatted and was sociable. So, it was like every other day that Craig sat in his usual spot at the cafe down the street. Alone. Staring at his phone.
It wasn't that he was antisocial in anyway but not that he wanted to be alone. He just was. And for the world of him he couldn't decide whether he liked it or not. Perhaps, it would be nice if he had a friend to go to brunch with, but then again keeping up appearances was immensely draining.
Someone, a woman, screamed. Startled, Craig looked up from his phone. Eyes wide and heart thumping in his chest. There was a man on one knee on the cafe floor, and a young woman stood before him with her hands on her mouth in disbelief. It took Craig a moment to realise what had happened and why he had heard screaming. The man had proposed.
"Yes!" She exclaimed, slowly and carefully, before pouncing on the man and kissing him.
Craig cringed and looked at his phone again. Maybe it would be nice to have someone care as much as that man did, he wondered. But couldn't bring himself to intertwine himself with someone else like that. Craig signed and tapped on his phone screen as he took a sip of his tea.
Boys in books were much better, he told himself. It was no secret that Craig was obsessed with cheesy romance books. When he couldn't find good stories he wanted to read in stores he went online. Like one would normally do. Now, he'd developed a habit of reading some cheesy sappy romance story before bed. It was probably not good for his eyes...or for his sleeping schedule. But he truly didn't care. His fix was more important. It was basically his drug. And when he couldn't find any more of the stories he wanted to read he began writing his own. It was his writing that helped him realise a lot about who he was.
"Sir," a voice called out to him, and Craig looked up. "Would you like me to refill your tea?" She smiled and waited for his prompt. Craig looked down at his 'one person' tea pot and nodded.
As the girl cleared the table he wondered, what was her life like, was it lonely, was it exciting, did she have Someone to hold her at night. It wasn't long ago that he had finally, after many years, come out to his closest friend and finally revealed his true feelings to the man. But as his luck would have it, he'd gotten rejected. Craig signed. The rejection worked well on his part because it fuelled his next hit story: Hopeless Romantic.
