The refugee crisis is a human crisis: Behind the statistics are people filled with unique life experiences and dreams for the future. They are mothers longing to return home, fathers yearning to work again, children searching for a childhood.
It breaks my heart to read about the refugee crises all over the world. First it was Aylan Kurdi, who drowned in the sea while escaping Syria in the boat with his family. He was found on the shore of Turkish waters, faced down. The little one was only two at that time. His elder brother, Galip and his mother died too. Crises in Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan have displaced more than 11 million people around the world - more than half of the refugee population worldwide. Meanwhile, conflict and climate hazards in Myanmar and Somalia have forced millions more to leave their homes behind.
Then, the picture of Oscar Alberto Martinez, 25, and his 24-month-old daughter Angie Valeria put a renewed focus on the plight of refugees and migrants who are mostly from Central America. The pair had traveled from El Salvador and were seeking asylum in the United States. There are also reports of children being 'caged' in the refugee camps. These children are also at higher chances of being assaulted.
Also, we have heard about crises in the Lebanon, Myanmar, Palestine...the list goes on. All refugees have suffered unimaginable loss, whether they are displaced in their own country or seeking safety overseas. Yet they are filled with potential and the strength to triumph over adversity. Their story is our story, because we are all human - and together, we can build a better world.
We are witnessing a massive shift of humanity unlike any seen before. Today more than 70 million people around the world are displaced from their homes.
