Corvinus has had a crush on Annelise since they first met at 8 years old. Corvinus was never really confident whenever he wanted to express his emotions, and it took him 4 years to work up the courage to try. Annelise wasn't interested in dating at the time (and never really would be), so he tried to be subtle by asking her to be his parabatai. Unfortunately though

If aught but death part thee and me." (The Oath of the Parabatai),
parabatai are forbidden by the Clave to be romantically linked, because it's not merely heartache and betrayal but magical disaster that is impossible to prevent. Annelise had said, in relief, that it was "Good, one less flirty guy to deal with later in life.". Corvinus was crushed, he didn't show it, but he quickly settled to be her nerdy sidekick. All shown affection, if any, was just as everybody saw it: brotherly love. Or was it?
