Our parents have gone missing. It is so lonely without Mama and Papa around, singing songs that were never sung on the radio, that were out of time. The songs seemed to take place centuries ago, which wouldn't make sense since Mama and Papa are only twenty something. Right?
"Jonah!" Jonah's head flies up from his desk's top. "What is the answer to number 4?" His teacher questioned. Jonah gulped, looking down at his paper.
"The answer is 3, 489, 562 x 1078, Miss Harper." Jonah answered.
"Very good, Mr. Pan. You are a senior now, so I expect you to be at your best and not dozing off in my class."
"Yes, Ma'am."
After School
Jonah walked over to his sister's school, awaiting for their bell to ring to dismiss them. The sky was dark, rain spattering down from it in huge droplets, painting the city with wetness. Jonah held his umbrella closer to his body, fighting off the cold that was seeping into his bones. His breath created fog in front of his face as people ran about him, using briefcases and papers to shield their heads if they didn't have umbrellas. Cars and trucks plus the double-decker buses sloshed about on the streets, spraying people mulling about on the sidewalks if the tires encountered puddles on the streets and in gutters. Some daredevils were actually riding around on bicycles, wearing a skintight suit that had the British flag on it.
Finally, the bell of the middle school rang. The school started spilling out the students like a flood. Jonah waited at the corner, avoiding the other children that scurried around. When the crowd started thinning, and Ava still hadn't shown up, Jonah left his spot, moving towards the school that looked dreary with the sky as a backdrop. "Ava?" Jonah called out. She didn't answer him, and he called her with his phone. It rang a few times, before he heard her ringtone around the corner of the building. He moved towards the sound, and he heard the sounds of someone fighting. There was yelling and someone crying out. "Ava?" Jonah called out again, louder this time. The sounds stopped before running footsteps took over the airwaves. Jonah rounded the corner and saw a person laying on the ground, clutching their side. "Ava!" Jonah ran and knelt by his sister's side, helping her up as he assessed her injuries. "Why don't you just tell the administration about this?"
"Because, even if I do, they wouldn't do anything because this is my last year at the school." Ava whispered, shivering in the cold air.
"They could still stop it!"
"Then the problem would start next year. Can we just go home?" Ava whispers and Jonah nods, pulling Ava close to his side to keep her warm.
It didn't talk long for them to get home, unlocking the door, taking off their rain boots, and shrugging off their rain coats to hang them up. Jonah gazed at the coat rack, noticing that his mothers and father's coats weren't hung up, along with his father's hat. "Mama and Papa aren't home yet." Jonah whispers and Ava nods, sliding along the floorboards in her socks. "Start your homework. I'll make some Hot Cocoa."
"Yes!" Ava yells, racing into the dining room to start her homework at the table. "With cinnamon!"
"Of course!" Jonah shouts from behind his sister as he tickles her sides.
"Ah! Don't do that! I'm not a child anymore." Ava laughs and Jonah shakes his head.
"You're still my baby sister. Doesn't matter if you believe it or not." Jonah clicks on the radio. Static was first heard before the music started playing. Jonah then placed a pot of water on the stove, clicking on the heat. "How did you do on your test?"
"I couldn't remember how to factor, but other than that, I believe I did fine."
"Factoring is the easiest part."
"To you maybe. The star child. The perfect student."
"I thought the saying was 'The perfect child. The star student'."
"See, you're even correcting me."
"Ah, I can't help it."
"Sure you can. You just choose not too." Ava complains and Jonah sighs, glancing over at the pot to see the water bubbling and boiling. He grabs out two mugs from the cherrywood cupboards. He moved to the pantry, reaching in to grab the coco powder. He put three tablespoons of the powdery stuff into each mug, before filling the mugs up with the scalding water. He then placed the pot back on the stove, some water still steaming in it. He shuffled back to the pantry, replacing the cocoa for cinnamon.
"We only have sticks, so you can probably just drink it through the stick." Jonah said to Ava, who nodded, head bent over her homework. Jonah placed one stick in each mug, the brown liquid swirling slightly with the added object.
Ava glanced up from her homework as her mug was placed before her, and she smiled up at Jonah, who sat down across from her. "Thanks."
"No problem." There was a knock at the door and Ava ran to the door, skidding across the wood before hopping onto the hall's rug. She peeked through the window beside the door, scurrying back as she saw who it was. Jonah glanced at his sister before unlocking the door. "Can I help you?" Jonah questions the stranger.
A man with shaggy blonde hair stood on the doorstep. He was dressed in a trench coat that was the color of midnight. He had a fedora on his head. The man next to him was dressed in similar attire, from the coat to the hat. Everything was the same except this man had brown hair with brown eyes while as the first man had grey eyes. 'Their auras are off, like they're bad, but they couldn't be, since they know Mama and Papa.' Jonah thought, assessing the gentlemen hanging out on the porch.
"Hello. My name is Felix, and this here is Nate. We were wondering if your parents were home."
