Outside, the sky was a canvas of dark, billowing clouds. Thunder rumbled in the distance, breaking the tomb-like silence that enveloped the misty mountain. When lightning cut a silver streak in the bleak sky, the magnificent roof of a castle could be seen.

Inside the castle walls, a little girl with a face devoid of any emotion was walking through a hallway lit by ensconced torches. Her silver hair was decorated with two white lilies, matched with a plain white kimono and wooden sandals. She stopped at a closed door and slid it open. A man was seated in a corner, his eyes the haunting color of dark crimson, framed by dark locks of black, wavy hair. He looked up as the girl entered the bleak room.

"Ah, Kanna. What news do you bring for me?" Naraku asked in a monotone voice.

Wordlessly, she showed the Yata no Kagami clutched in her small hands. The reflection revealed the procession of the inu-youkai Sesshomaru and his entourage. It was a typical sight, but one of his perfectly curved eyebrows arched as he noticed another member of the daiyoukai's pack. Inuyasha's little miko.

His forehead creased into a frown. "Sesshomaru, you fool. Why must you always meddle with my plans?"

The mirror flashed another image. It showed Inuyasha sitting on the rim of the Bone Eeater's Well, staring pensively at the woods. His usual companions were not with him, just as what Naraku had planned. It had been the endgame of his plan all along—to break apart the company that might stand a chance against him in the final battle for the Shikon no Tama.

And that pest, Kagome... she had been the biggest problem of all. Her miko powers might be untrained, but once she learned to tap into that vast reiki residing inside her, she might even surpass Kikyo.

She should have died in Hone no Oka, Naraku made sure of that. He knew Inuyasha would choose Kikyo above all else. She was his mate, after all. The inu-youkai valued their mates over life.

But his calculations missed Sesshomaru's interference. Since when did the proud daiyoukai cared about the miko?

Now, the biggest threats to his plans were journeying together—but for what?

Naraku stared at the Shikon no Tama in his left hand. There were only a few shards left before he completed the jewel and purge his human self from his body. He looked at the Yata no Kagami again, his face filling with pure disdain as the miko played with the human child under Sesshomaru's watchful eyes.

If he continued to impede his plans to kill Kagome, then Naraku must find a way to dispose of the daiyoukai as well. His last attempt to kill him using the dragon demon and hundreds of youkai failed pathetically. Even without the aid of the Shikon jewel, Sesshomaru was simply powerful on his own.

His crimson eyes lit up suddenly, a wicked smirk forming on his lips. What better way to defeat the daiyoukai, but through his magnanimous strength?

The answer, Naraku knew, lay on the little girl staring at him with black, empty eyes.
