The One at the Door

I got home fearing the punishment I would receive from my dad. I walked in and he was lying on the couch too drunk to notice me. I should've guessed it, but I wasn't risking being late.

The next morning, I was woken up by a knock on the door. I opened it and saw Shawn.

"What do you want?" I asked annoyed he was here.

He took over my mom's place and now he feels the nerve to come over here. This guy is unbelievable.

"You left your phone. I tried to give it to Riley to give to you at school, but she told me you were suspended," he said. "And it's confirmed by the fact that you're here and not in school."

I took the phone and eyed him suspiciously.

"Don't worry, I won't tell your mom," he said. "This time. Next time I hear about anything like this, I'll be talking with her."

"Thanks. Shouldn't you be at work, or do you even really have a job?"

Shawn laughed to himself a little.

"Yes, Maya, I really do have a job, and I've decided, as of right now, I'm going to take the next two days off."

"Why would you do that?" I asked.

"Because I see that your dad is passed out drunk," he said peering into the apartment. "And I thought that you could use a good father figure just as much as I'd like to get to know my future stepdaughter."

"Do I have a choice?" I groaned.

"Nope."

"Fine, I need to get ready though," I said pointing at my pajamas and unbrushed hair.

"You can come in, I guess," I motioned to Shawn. "Just be quiet, my dad's sleeping."

He walked in and made his way over the liquor bottles on the ground and general clutter.

"This is your room?" he asked looking around at the art on the walls. "You're really talented."

"Thanks," I said genuinely blushing.

It's not very often I hear compliments, especially in my own home.

"You need to leave my room now," I told him.

"What?" he asked coming out of his trance.

"Get out. I need to change and I don't think you want to see that, well, unless my mom's new fiancé is a perv," I smirked.

"I most definitely am not a pervert," he said getting flustered.

"Then get out," I said starting to get changed.

He quickly left and shut the door behind him. I laughed to myself a little. He's a pretty good guy, maybe having him as a stepdad won't be that bad.
