“A normal person would question the mind of one who is insane. It takes another person of insanity to be able to calm another with a broken mind.” Star wrote the words down on the napkin and folded it into her pocket. She watched as Dr. Hanson walked over to her. His green eyes shining through his bangts of black hair. He truly did look like a black cat, Star smiled to herself.
“Miss Star Casey,” He said greeting her as formal as ever. “Are you ready to go back to your room.” He asked, as if she had a choice.
She stood up and grabbed her camo green bag, which was covered in all sorts of badges, and she proceeded to follow Dr. Hanson down a long, dingy corridor.
The corridor had a very familiar smell of cheap lemon bleach which burnt the eyes of anybody who walked down it, it was joined with the sound of trainers squeaking on the bleached out floor tiles as well.
The corridor seemed endless, doctors followed by nurses which were followed by patients walked past Star and Dr. Hanson every few minutes.
“It's nice to see your face again Star.” Hanson said to fill the silence as they got up to Stars corridor, she didn't say a word and just nodded.
“Still not a massive talker”, he replied, “I thought after these months you would of started talking more.”
She stayed silent and shrugged.
He looked at her with sadness in his eyes before pushing down the handle of her room, “Here we are. Room sweet room.”
Star entered her room and stopped in the center. It was a small square shaped white room. Each brick looked like the other and the lights blared down from above. Star hated it. She turned to Dr. Hanson and held out the napkin. He looked at her skeptically, before reaching out his hand and taking the napkin. As he read it his young face grew in perplexity, re-reading the words on the paper napkin in his hands. “Star what does this mean?” He asked handing the napkin back to Star, but she refused to take it.
“It’s for you silly. You’re the only person here who makes me feel sane, because you’re as insane as me.” she smiled at him. Dr. Hanson told himself on the first day that being in charge of this girl would be his greatest challenge, but now that he finds himself loving her, things are getting harder than he expected. It’s not love like romance, but one more of care. Because how could this girl as sweet and as brilliant as his dearest Star Casey, be here in this mental hospital? How could she be sent away, when she should be out in the world. Living.
“I can assure you Star, that you’re the most sane person in this institution. All these other people are here for a reason. You’re here because of bribery and non accepting parents.” Dr. Hanson said. Examining Star’s expressions, loving her smile, then it faded.
“Why is it that my parents don’t accept me, Dr. Hanson? Why do they praise a book above all else?” Star’s expression reminded still and unwavering, there was no glimmer in her eye that Dr. Hanson had come to know and love. She was empty. Maybe that’s why she was in here… Because there were moments when Star left herself and became a void.
“Because that’s how they were raised, and they believe-”
“They believe… they do not know.” Star interrupted him. “They don’t know… how to love anyone else but their god.”
She walked over to her bed and sat down, “Why don’t people love others the way they should?”
She layed on her back and just stared at the blank ceiling,
“Why don't they love somebody who actually exists?”, she finally said before Dr. Hanson closed her door, “why don't they love me?” she said quietly to herself.
