After the events of last fall, you, Steve, and Dustin hung out a lot.
In fact, a couple months ago you started to realize what those feelings were that you held towards Steve. You definitely liked him- a lot. Sometimes you even felt like Dustin could see right through you.
After graduation, you had no clue what your future was going to look like. You decided to just take some time off school, and figure things out. You and Steve talked about your plans for the future, and he shared with you that he couldn't get in to tech. So, instead of working for his dad, he was applying for a job at the new mall this summer.
You thought that getting a job right now was a good idea, so you offered to apply with him, and he revealed that the place was called 'Scoops Ahoy'. It was an ice cream parlor, which sounded like it would be busy during the summer. At least you wouldn't get bored.
You and Steve both got the job, along with another girl named Robin Buckley, whom you'd met before at Hawkins high.
The only downside to the job was the outfit. You and Robin wore matching sailor outfits, while Steve's was a bit different. The three of you had to wear hats that said 'Ahoy' across them, because it was company policy.
Other than that, you enjoyed working there with Steve and Robin. You and Robin had quickly become good friends, she would mess with Steve a lot-- and sometimes you, which you could tell was a good thing.
You and Steve were in the back when you heard Robin yell, "Hey, dinguses, your children are here!"
You sigh and open the sliding windows to the front. "Again? Seriously?" You ask in annoyance, glaring at your younger brother. Mike stares back, and rings the bell again in response. Steve ushers them to the back and lets them go into the service hall so that they can get into the movies for free. "I swear, if anybody hears about this-!"
"We're dead!" They all respond.

Not too long after that, Robin was on cash register duty while you and Steve scooped ice cream. Suddenly, the power went out in the whole mall.
"That's weird." Steve says, we you and Robin look around confusedly. Steve goes over to the light switch and starts turning it off and on repeatedly.
"That isn't gonna work, dingus." Robin remarks. "Yeah, that switch isn't connected to the whole mall." You add. "Oh, really?" Steve questions, and he starts flipping the switch even faster.
A few moments later, the power comes back on in the mall. "Let there be light." Steve says, proudly as he holds up his hands thinking he really helped the power come back.
The three of you got back to work brushing off the power outage.

The next day while business was pretty slow, you and Robin left Steve to work in the front.
"Alrighty, one scoop of chocolate." Steve says as he finishes the cone and hands it to the girl who ordered it. "That's a buck-twenty-five. Anything else?" The girl accepts the ice cream and pulls out her money as Steve takes notice of her shirt. "Ooh, Purdue. Fancy." He smiles.
"Yeah, I'm excited." The girl responds, smiling back. The girl and her friend chuckle as Steve opens the register.
"Yeah, you know, I considered it, Purdue, but then I was like, you know what? I really think I need some real-life experience, you know, before I hit college, see what it feels like. Kinda like, uh, I don't know, see what it's like to earn a working-man's wage, you know? Uh-" Steve messes up the register and it starts beeping at him. "Oh, I'm sorry." He fixes it and finishes his monologue. "I think that's, like, really important."
"Yeah, totally." The girl replies, sarcastically. "Yeah, anyway, this was, like, so fun. We should kind of like, you know, I don't know, maybe hang out this weekend or--" Steve hands the change to the girl but the coins drop. "Oh, sorry about that." He apologizes.
"Uh, I don't know." The girl says in response to hanging out.
"Maybe next weekend or-"
"Yeah, I'm busy."
"Oh, that's cool. I'm- I'm working here next weekend, so the following weekend's better for me." Steve stammers. "No. I'm sorry, I can't." She blatantly responds. "Okay, thanks." She turns to leave. "I- This is my first day here." Steve stammered as they walked away laughing.
Robin grabs the whiteboard, displaying a chart of 'You Rule' and 'You Suck' on it. It already has five tallies under 'You Suck', and none under 'You Rule'. She goes over to window as Steve sighs and says, "And another one bites the dust."
You join her and rest your head on your hands, leaning your elbows on the counter. "You are oh-for-six, Popeye." Robin remarks as she draws another tally under 'You Suck'. "Yeah, yeah, I can count." Steve replies.
"You know that means you suck." Robin said to him. "Yep, I can read, too." Steve answers annoyed as you laugh. "Since when?" Robin asks.
"It's this stupid hat. I am telling you, it is totally blowing my best feature." Steve said, pointing at the ahoy hat. "Yep, company policy is the reason why you can no longer flirt." You reply, a bit sarcastically. "You know, this might be a crazy idea to you, but have you ever considered telling the truth?" You ask.
"Oh, you mean, that I couldn't even get into Tech and my douchebag dad's trying to teach me a lesson, I make three bucks an hour, and I have no future? That truth?" Steve responded harshly. Robin points at some new customers. "Hey, twelve o'clock."
"Oh, shit. Oh, shit. Okay, uh, I'm going in. Okay? And you know what? Screw company policy." Steve says as he pulls off his hat and throws it to the side. You catch it as Robin sarcastically remarks, "Oh, my God, you're a whole new man."
"Right? Ooh." He taunts before turning around to face the group of girls that walked in.
"Ahoy, ladies! Didn't see you there." The girls jump a little. "Would you guys like to set sail on this ocean of flavor with me? I'll be your captain. I'm Steve Harrington."
"Can I get you guys a little taste of the Cherries Jubilee? No? Anybody? Banana boat? Four people, four spoons? Share it in a booth? Anybody? It's hot out there." Steve suggested aimlessly as you and Robin cringed. She went over and marked another tally under 'You Suck'.
Once that horror show of flirting was over you placed Steve's hat on the counter for him, and said, "Looks like you'll be needing this. Whatever that was, well, the issue had nothing to do with the hat."
He turned towards you and grabbed the hat sighing in defeat. "Yeah. Guess I've lost my charm."
"Hey, don't sweat it. It's still there. You just gotta find it. It'll probably help to take a break for a while, you know? Recharge or some shit." You said to him. You were actually kind of happy that no one was falling for Steve right now, other than yourself. It did make you feel a bit bad though, watching him flirt--or attempt to--with other girls.
"Yeah, you're right. Dustin should be back from camp soon, right? Maybe I just need my wing-man." Steve responded. You lightly laughed. "Yeah, I think he'll be back any day now." You said.
You and Steve smiled at each other and were enjoying the moment when all of a sudden the bell at the front started ringing. "Hey, can I get some help here, maybe?" Robin asked annoyedly, her words pulling your focuses away from each other.
As you got back to work with the other two you felt content, like you made the right choice to wait for your future.
